I want to transfer to University of Michigan, what are my chances?

Hi everybody, and thank you for doing this. I'm going into my sophomore year this fall at Oakland University and I would really like to attend Michigan for the fall semester 2012. I applied to Michigan coming out of high school, but I got a letter with the opportunity to be put on the waiting list, but did not follow up on it because I couldn't afford the school at the time anyway. In high school I did poor my freshman year with a 3.4 but the following years consistently got around a 3.9 and ended up with a final high school GPA of 3.79. My ACT was a 28. My major at Oakland is Biology B.S. My freshman year grades at Oakland were a 3.95 first semester and a 4.0 second semester leaving me with a 3.975 freshman GPA with 37 credits (4 of those being AP credits--Calculus). I took two semesters of freshman Biology, psychology, one semester of German, writing, an introductory honors course, the first semester of chem, and stats. I've already scheduled for next year and I finish up chem, I take the second semester of German, I start and finish physics, I have one or two honors courses, and I have a few biology courses. I'm in the honors college at Oakland. I'm also in the pre-med society. I'm a member for fall 2011 of Alpha Lamba Delta Honors Society. I started volunteering at Genesys Hospice at the beginning of the year and I believe I have about 43 hours of community service, part of which includes vigil care which is typically at about 2 in the morning. The application opens up August 1st, but I will be in Germany from July 17th to August 8th. Do you think it will help to apply right away, or should I wait so that I can get more college grades in there and rack up some more volunteer hours? Also of course, do you guys think I can get in? Thank you so much!

Can you afford Michigan now? You say that you couldn’t afford it when you first applied.

If you are pre-med, your goal should be to get through your undergraduate program as inexpensively as possible so that you can afford med school. How much debt would transferring leave you with?

You need to find out when transfer applications are due at Michigan. Often the cut-off date is later than for freshmen. You also need to find out if there is a different cut-off date for any scholarships that are available for transfer students. That information will determine when you want to actually apply.

Good luck!

Are you instate for UMich?

UMich is very expensive as an OOS student.

Yes I can afford it now for two years. I’m in state.
