I was deferred ... what's next?

I don’t know what to expect … I’m guessing they want to see my first semester grades before making a decision? Should I email them? What are the chances I get in now? Somebody please explain to me

Same here… Please help. What are our chances of getting in before they release RD in April?

make sure to apply to other schools RD. they will also need to look at your mid-year grades. good luck  not sure what the chances are

In the same boat. I have a lock on rejection, though, since my mid-year report will be poor and that is basically the only thing that would change their decision and that they are curious about. Senior year isn’t going too well. I have 3 guaranteed B’s and 3 guaranteed A’s… what’s the point of going to school anymore.

I’m very interested to hear this. I was deferred as well this round, and I want to know what my chances are. I heard there was only a very small amount of applicants (30-60) that were deferred, so how many do they take form this number? What is the next step for me to ensure I have a good shot at being accepted regular.

Keep your grades up. You should have a good shot if you have a good mid-year report.

Same here. Not sure if I’m supposed to feel disappointed or grateful.

Feel grateful! Very few students get deferred!

I got deferred too. Pretty disappointing.

Do they release any numbers on the amount of deferred applicants who get in RD?

Is anyone gonna try for an alumnus interview?

Can you fly out to evanston for an interview with admissions?

Can’t go to Evanston, but there was an alumn in my area I was going to meet before ED was due (couldn’t cause of schedule conflicts).

i got deferred as well :frowning: do any of you guys know the recent stats for deferred applicants?

“Thank you for contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admission. While we cannot guarantee that your scores will arrive in time for review, you are welcome to send results from the February test date with priority shipping. Also, you are welcome to make additions or corrections to your application by submitting them to this e-mail address. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.”

I emailed Admissions asking if they would accept ACT scores from the February test date.

The steps I’m taking are to retake the ACT for the fourth time, reworking my essays, and making sure my mid year report was completely solid.

I sent an email as well … I got no new information out of it.

I think I was deferred because they want to see my first semester grades (my GPA was the weakest part of my application) … But the most frustrating part for me is that I don’t know if the deferral acts as a waitlist and if they’ll compare me to other RD applicants who might have better resumes …

These next few months are going to be tormenting

Anyone else deferred from School of Communication? If the cap is 100 and they say they filled 50% of the class of 2020 early does that mean that there are only 50 slots left? Or does that not apply to Communication? Gah! I’m so nervous!

The target number of incoming students for the School of Communication’s theatre program has been approximately 100; for the school as a whole, 400. While NU has accepted 50% of its incoming class, that’s across all schools, not necessarily 50% of each school or program.

NU’s policy has been to defer only a small percentage of ED applicants about whom they want more academic info before making a decision. Decisions regarding deferred students have come out in March along with the RD decisions. Students who are deferred are not put on a waiting list. http://www.northbynorthwestern.com/story/northwestern-admissions-alters-early-decision-poli/

I was deferred last year. I found that they defer ~100 students each year, usually a little less, and end up accepting about half (not sure about that since I saw someone else say they accepted a lot less, I’m just saying what my research last year found). I don’t think they release official numbers on that, iirc that was from what people heard from the admissions office. Anyway, I had pretty good mid-semester grades, I think 3 A’s and a B, but I was still rejected in the end. Not sure if that’s because I was unable to raise my ACT after two more tries (Dec and Feb [of course I got a 34 after my rejection came]) or what. I guess I felt hopeful because of the ~half being accepted, so it really sucked not getting in.

The only advice I can give is make sure to send a deferral letter of interest, bonus points if you restate your commitment to NU/will attend if accepted (it’s not binding like ED obviously but it helps), and you should probably focus more on doing very well in your second semester classes and adding some achievements to include in your letter of interest, unless you’re really sure you can raise your ACT too.

Deferred is a signal to move on. You were not in the top group of candidates and now have the opportunity to find that right fit school where the fit and interest is mutual.
