Colleges I'm interested in:
Duke
Rice

Emory
Wake Forest
Washington University in St. Louis
Tulane
Oxford at Emory
University of Miami

What are my chances for the above schools? Which area do you think I need more work on? Also, are my extracurriculars mediocre or above average (I haven't showed them to anyone... and I don't know if they're interesting/unique)?

Thanks!

anyone? help me out

I’d say as a whole you are great. You have a good SAT score, legit SAT subject test scores, your GPA is good, and your extra curriculars (specifically the first) are great.

I’d say don’t even bother including your honor societies and youth leadership.

The only problem is that you are an overrepresented minority from an over represented area. But I would say you are going to get in at most of these colleges.

As for your ECs, the two you founded are pretty unique to me. Anywho, what is the name of your magazine? And then some of the literary and art magazines you have had your poetry/photography published in? I enjoy both of these activities, and would like to see if I’m good enough to get published.

Chance me back?

Poseidenj,

Thanks for the chance :). I’m not going to name specific magazines, but Duotrope’s Digest is a great place to weed out some competitive journals. Google it. Hope that helps!

Your ECs are fantastic.

Honestly, you have some of the best ECs of any one student out there. Just get good grades for the rest of your time and you have great chances.

Aren’t you interested in any other Ivies?

Great EC’s. I agree with smart.cookie, you have a good chance at most of your schools, but with schools like Brown, you really never know. Good luck though, you are a great applicant! (And enjoy summer)

Thanks, everyone! It’s really helpful knowing your opinions :)

QuasiProfound, I’m interested in Cornell, too. However, I haven’t visited the school yet, and its rigor is a little intimidating. That’s what made me doubtful about UChicago at first too (because of its famed rigor), but I absolutely love that school and its “personality.”

I don’t think I have much of a chance at any other Ivies because my application’s far from perfect compared to other competitive students.

This is just a random question that I’ve been wondering-- I’m planning on applying ED for Duke, but I’m wondering if that’ll hurt my chances getting financial aid? My family falls into the $10,000-14,000 income bracket. Does it affect the amount of aid I receive at all?

I would say don’t apply early decision to duke, because then you can’t compare any financial aid packages. But, if your family really makes that much, I’m pretty sure your family won’t have to make any contribution. Look for need blind and if you want, loan-free financial aid policy colleges.

What do you think you wanna major in?

Sorry!

Major mistake. I meant my family falls in the $100,000-$140,000 income bracket. That makes a big difference, doesn’t it. I’m not a morning person :

Poseidenj, I want to major in biology and minor in photography

YOu EC’s are very unique in that not many students can brag about being active in the publishing world to the extent that you have. Your SAT scores are a bit low for the higher places liek Duke, and U CHicago, but the thing is, score are not everything. If these literary endeavors are your passion ,then I say keep on pursuing them and make them your focus on you college app. Show the colleges that you are an active person who is passionate about doing what you love.

Here is what you can do to improve yourself:
SAT scores need to be increased: 2200+ to be safe 2300+ to be WAY WAY WAY better off
SAT II’s: they seem a bit weak, if you are still a junior you have a chance in october. Have you done any other sciences, hist or languages? Maybe conside SATII literature?

I think you have a good chance to get into all of those schools if you can jsut finetune some of those SAT scores. :)

Thanks Djokovic. I think i’m best at bio in the sciences. Would I be better off if I got a higher SATII score in another subject (I think I am going to take it in Literature) even if I’m planning to major in biology?

It’s up to you for the SATII scores, really. On the one hand, it’s good to show a variety of strengths, but on the other hand if you’re serious about bio (which it sounds like you are) maybe you should enter that one? I’m just thinking about my friend who applied to Yale last year SCEA (She was deferred then accepted). She put on her app that she wanted to major in Physics and when she was deferred she called to see how she could make her app better, and they said that she should get a Physics recommendation (seeing as she wanted to major in it but she didn’t have a rec for it). She ended up switching to a chem major, lol. So I don’t know! It’s up to you.

As for the other things, your ECs really stand out, especially the first one. That’s so cool! Really interesting idea. Your grades are fine. The thing is though, you are an ORM so you might need to really bring up your scores (more than usual). The things you do though are mostly atypical so just make yourself really stand out as a person…not an Asian
(trust me, I’m also part Asian and I’m trying my best to be atypical!)

(I hate doing this…but chance back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/717572-another-one-those.html )

Thanks and good luck!

I think you have a great chance at all the schools, everything that you listed seems great, just make sure to write good essays and get good recs. If I were you I wouldn’t report your ethnicity. Last time I checked it wasn’t required, so hey, they are going to assume that you’re in the majority but won’t know for a fact that you’re asian. Don’t get me wrong your heritage is great, just not compatible with the admission process at all the Ivies… =/

thanks everyone :)
