Hey there,

Thanks to everyone who will dedicate some time to read this thread and even more to those who will answer. I just got my may sat scores, not as good as I expected but got 1660. 550 CR 570M 540WR. I understand that this is a very poor score for engineering. In addition I already graduated from high school in my country last December, and didnt take the SAT until Now. I served in the army in the national guard of my country for a year and back in High school I was a very good student, my approval rate was above 85% and my class rank was top 10%. Having said that all, I am planning to apply to RIT this summer. I have a good Transcript with a GPA of 3.3 along with recommendations that make emphasis on my interest with in engineering. One good thing is that I am not requiring financial aid, meaning that my chances are a little higher there. Do I stand A chance here?
Thanks Again

The SAT scores aren’t too good, and that is one of the only ways for schools to judge the academics of foreign students, because the admissions people don’t know anything about the teaching standards or competitiveness of your high school.

On the other hand, RIT is always in need of more diversity, so that may help you out. I have heard that a lot of times when students apply for engineering but don’t make the cut they are offered a spot in engineering tech, which is basically a more hands-on version of engineering with less high-level theory type stuff. I would say there’s no harm in trying to apply for engineering. You never know.

Hi. I’m an incoming student for RIT engineering as well. Just some thoughts, because I have a lot of friends who attend. Since you are from a foreign country, I don’t know how well the numbers will hold, or what difference it will make, but…

Coming out of my school in the last 5 years, there have been 42 students accepted to RIT for either engineering or engineering tech. Of those, only about 70% scored an 1800 or above on the SATs, and the average math score for those that scored lower was approximately 560, which is slightly lower than yours. (I’m taking these stats off a website my school has for students to see their chances. Unfortunately, it’s only for students from my school.) Now on the other hand, I go to a very large school, and the average class rank hovered around 15% with an average GPA (weighted) around 100. Un-weighted on a 4.0 scale, that would be about the same as yours.

So, I would say that you have a shot, so go for it. It can’t hurt to try, can it?

Also, just for reference, I got into the honors program (quite exclusive, less than 100 per graduating class of 4000ish) with an SAT of 2260 (700M 760W 800CR) and I’m going for engineering. So even though my math was the lowest…

Also, RIT values experience. I have a friend with absolutely terrible scores (I had to swear never to tell anyone just how bad) who still got in because he had a lot of experience through his job and through FIRST Robotics. So if you can find a way to get a lot of experience, that might help you too.

Anyway, I hope that the statistics and anecdotes help you decide what to do!
Good luck!

If you concern about the SAT scores, how about attending Monroe Community College instead. It has 2+2 with most RIT engineering programs and it is much easier to enroll than RIT.

Good luck!

What might be my chances with a SAT score of 2050 (730 M/ 650 CR/ 670 Writing) ?
I am an international student.
I scored 94.4% in my grade 12 board ( CBSE) examinations.
I am interested in computer engineering.

I’m an internationl student, too. I’m interested in CScience. Does RIT provide need-based aid or merit-based aid for int’l students?. I don’t see any data in Collegeboard. My SAT score is 1860 (M: 710, W: 640 (7/12 essay), CR: 510), I’ll retake in Oct. Do I stand a chance?
Besides, on average how much does an int’l student have to pay each year at RIT?

@confusedabtuni If your overall application exhibits the same level of quality as your SATs, you won’t have an issue, unless there is some serious blemish. Over 2000 is top-notch for RIT.

@MaiQuynhTruong I assume you’re retaking for more prestigious schools, 1860 isn’t that bad for RIT, although your reading is low. If I was an admissions official I would understand a low CR score from an international, especially if you’re ESL.

CS probably has a ton of applicants at RIT because it’s the classic nerd degree, so that might increase their competitiveness. RIT does not give need-based aid to international students, probably because the required financial disclosure procedures aren’t applicable to non-US taxpayers. But the Merit aid that RIT offers is available to any student that qualifies, and you might qualify for the lower level presidential scholarship (10k per year). If you bump your SATs a bit higher, you will definitely qualify.

See here for all the merit-based aid opportunities: http://www.rit.edu/emcs/financialaid/table_merit.html
