Interview: Yes. For future applicants, fyi: it’s not a real interview. You walk in and an admissions counselor meets with you. They introduce themselves, you introduce yourself, they ask what activities you like to do, and then ask if you have any questions about RIT. I straight up asked them what sets RIT apart from schools with seemingly better academics like Northeastern and the counselor didn’t have an answer. I also asked him if I could have a major with two minors just to test if he knew what he was talking about, and he didn’t know. tl;dr they’re not actually prepared to answer anything, whether it’s subjective or objective, so the interview is useless.

Reflection: Didn’t visit, spent a lot of time on portal researching.
I find it interesting that he hasn’t been really rejected from any school just offered something different. Like: “your good but not good enough”

Strengths: SAT
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t realize ME was difficult or would have chosen Engineering exploration
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Virginia Tech, Penn State (Behrend) 2+2, Grove City College, WVU, Geneva College, waiting on CWRU. Rejected: Penn State University Park (this is how he see’s it)

@MSMead I found it surprising that what has been said before is apparently true concerning how overpopulated RIT is with MechEng majors. Your son’s credentials appear far better than my son’s but mine was CompEng and was accepted with much lower scores and extra-currs. If university park doesn’t take him, then VATech would be a great choice. The negative that I see in VATech though, is that the campus is huge and students have to travel in shuttlebuses. CaseWestern is topnotch on par with RPI but quite costly. Geneva may not offer him the challenge he will need and job placement might be a bit lacking. My best friend’s son went to Geneva for MechEng.

Thanks Reformedman. I don’t think he will choose Geneva for that reason. We will be visiting VATech in April to see the scope of the campus. We should know about CWRU by the end of the weekend. Its very expensive but they do offer pretty good aid so we’ll see. I didn’t love the campus in Cleveland but my son actually did.
The most convenient for us will be WVU (honors college) or Grove City College but its his choice.

FYI. I had my son send an email to the designated RIT address for (other options) asking for more details. He thought he would have at least been offered other options within the Kate Gleason School of Engineering and he wants to know why he wasn’t.
