*Academics
Currently: 3.9uw (just got straight A's in 4 APs/2 honors)
Rank: Currently 16/740 (from one of the best public schools in state ~45 nmsf in class 2012)
I screw up on SAT mainly because I get so nervous:
183 PSAT (68m 63w 52cr)- OCT
1900 SAT (670m 640w 590cr)- JAN
That is with minimal studying and now I am at ~2000-2100 w/ some.
AMC: 85.5
State Math Competition: ~190/320 (w/in top 50 scores I think and top 10%) - highest score in state usually gets around high 200s and like really low 300s
Awards: soon to be ap scholar something and I got Spanish student of the year in 9th grade, also a piano award from a program (playing 10 years)

*ECs:
(all of these are 9th through 11th [will be 12th too])
Volunteer: ~400hrs (same place)
NHS
FBLA -VP (11th) --> P (12th) - regional/state medals in math and economics (my majors)
S.A.G.E (mentorship/advice club) - public relations officer (9th)
Academic Decathlon - economics award (major)

How can I improve my chances? I REALLY want to go there for econ.
I am studying for nothing less than 2300 on the sat, I wasnt really bothered about it until now. Any advice please? I need guidance!!!

You look like a great candidate as a junior. I graduated early, but at the end of my sophomore year my SAT was 2040. I then raised it to 2250 with a lot of studying. The important part is the Critical Reading and Math, as that is what Uchicago sees. They discard reading because your essay must be commendable to be accepted. Apply early action!

This actually looks really good… I’m pretty sure you’re well within the top 15% who are trying to get in (GPA and ranking-wise). I agree that the current SAT score is a little low, however. If you can study and get over 2200, you’ll be fine I think. I’m also trying for UChicago, and wish you the best of luck!

Oh, and one thing I don’t get is your math SAT… You have all these impressive awards and positions in math, and yet you scored only 670? I think if you want UChicago to take your application seriously, you should raise the math SAT to 800 (not bragging or anything but I got 800 in math my freshman year with no studying).

The math section of the SAT can be tricky. You miss one and you get a significantly lower score (one time I took it, I got a 760 in math for getting one wrong.) If getting a couple of careless mistakes can invalidate all of your math accomplishments, I think something is wrong. However, I would agree that the math score should be raised to mid- to high 700’s. Everything else but SAT looks fine. Also, live high school life while you have it.

Based on what I hear and the types of people I see that get in, I think that for UChicago, it all really mostly matters on your essays and recommendations.

Also, on the accepted thread, I saw a guy who was 1/400, 4.00 gpa, won a bunch of awards, team captain for a varsity sport, near perfect SAT, participated in national competitions, ect. And was black, but didn’t get in.

yeah I understand the questions… haha, well It was just the beginning of my junior year that I started to get really sick. During the 1 week before psat I was immobile, stuck in bed all day and was taking more than 5 medications a day. I completely failed the psat and was really really nervous during sat…
In fact I think if I go with a chill attitude I will do better: my sophomore psat was 62cr, 70w, and 78m which I forgot to mention and I was without a care in the world! I know I can do better… I also took a practice act at this testing center and I got a 33 (w/ 36 math) how does that compare?

That’s some pretty scary stuff. Especially because I’m Asian (which is a huge disadvantage despite people’s persistence it’s not). Now I’m wondering if I should go for it anyways… I don’t know anymore. TT_TT

…Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a Dream…

Luciddream: why would what I said scare you? It was pretty much demonstrating that race doesn’t matter here as much as other colleges. Also, being Asian isnt a HUGE disadvantage (I’m asian). Its just a normal-size disadvantage. Good essays = a good shot

Your personal statement will play a HUGE role in the application process. You should probably raise your SAT score up a little, but I wouldn’t make that your priority. Focus on what you want to do in college and express those feelings in your essays.

Source: I’m an Asian student. I got…like a 1970 on my SAT1, but I got in Early Action. (I made up for my abysmal SAT scores with other things in my HS career).

Also…I currently attend another university. Good luck with the application process. UChicago is a beautiful and wonderful institution! :)
