Would applying to an iBanking internship with no prior internship/economic experience be a huge disadvantage? I don't know whether a job in economics is for me, but I want to explore and find out. I'm thinking about applying for the summer after freshman year.

Also, since you have to submit a resume, does that mean you can include stuff done in high school too? One year of college doesn't seem like enough to build an impressive resume esp. if you're planning on doing internships the summer after college. Thanks!

From what I’ve heard, you are not going an IB internship after freshman year with no prior experience or exposure to economics. I mean, it’s already tough enough to get internships after junior year even as a finance major.
However, it is entirely possible to get finance-related internships (just not in investment banking).

In my opinion, I would only add high school stuff if it was particularly impressive (like major recognition). Things like 4.0 GPA in high school are not impressive at that stage.

That’s interesting…on the Goldman Sachs website, it said that all undergraduates could apply for internships…maybe that means it’s super-super competitive? Thanks for your response terenc!

Agree with the other posters. An IB internship is quite difficult to attain even with experience. The kids who end up getting them know what they are doing and for the most part are quite prepared. Not to mention that banks only recruit at top schools.

Then what about other internship positions at Goldman Sachs? Are they still super-competitive for someone with limited experience in econ? Also, what does “prepared” mean–someone whose had finance internship experience under his belt, taken lots of econ classes? What else?

^Yes, someone who has had previous finance internships (not necessarily IB), people who have studied or taken classes in financial modeling, people who are leaders in finance clubs.

However, people without any finance experience or even Econ experience DO get internships in IB. It’s just that these kinds of people are usually rising seniors (in addition to being very intelligent). A sophomore with no experience is not going to get an IB position.
