iBook or PowerBook for College This Fall??

Lemmethink - Don't want to give you false hopes though. D did get awarded some financial aid and was given the opportunity to apply for a loan and then to request that the outside scholarships be used to pay in lieu of the loan. Hopefully you get the same opportunity to use your scholarships for the computer if you did not qualify for financial aid but that is something you will want to check into once the official information is sent out.

Do most kids have desktops/notebooks/both? Any suggestions?

Most people have laptops, a few have a laptop and a desktop, I doubt anyone has only a desktop as Dartmouth requires that you have a laptop. Get a laptop, but in the end it really doesn't matter which one you get, as long as you feel comfortable with it. I was just pointing out that the deals Dartmouth has aren't as good as they claim they are.

If you're looking for a printer, I strongly suggest the hp LaserJet 1012. It's a black + white laser, prints out papers very quickly + you don't have to worry about changing ink cartridges all the time (it uses toner, which lasts around 2,000 pages). Costs around $150 if you can find a good deal.
