I'd like to be an editor. Help me figure out how?

I'm an eighteen year old recent high school graduate with hopes of obtaining community college to complete my general education requirements. Once finished, I'm interested in attending university. I haven't decided whether or not I'd like to major/minor in English or communications, but I'm almost positive it's down to those two. What colleges should I look at? I have a few states of preference, and they include Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina (especially interested,) and California (also very interested.) However, I would be happy to explore other options if I am introduced to colleges with prestigious English departments and/or programs. Eventually, once graduated, I'd be interested in becoming an editor, and in the even more far-off future, a publisher. I'm not quite sure how I should go about this, but I figure first thing's first: find yourself a college. Any help offered would be sincerely appreciated, thanks!

A journalism major would probably be better for a job as an editor.

I don’t believe I have much interest in journalism at all. I love English courses, and communication courses, but I didn’t enjoy the only journalism class I was made to endure. x_X I’m looking to edit books, as opposed to newspapers and magazines. Does that make a difference? I’d like to avoid journalism if at all possible.

You should get your degree in English. Also make sure you get an internship or two with a book publishing company.

Good luck!

Thanks! I’m just unsure as to which colleges I should attempt to attend in the future in order to reach my goals.

My younger D was very interested in Boston College (she is also interested in book publishing) - but we couldn’t pull it off financially.

Thanks for the link! I’ll check it out.

Boston, NY and Chicago tend to be the centers for book publication. Schools around those areas would tend to have the best chances for internships which are very important in getting started in the industry. Some other well known colleges for English that may work are Denison and Kenyon.
