I'd like to hear a visit report on Truman State University

if anybody has one. I couldn't find it on the "college visits" section but I suppose only the more popular places get a spot in that section!

Been reading a lot at the web site but would like to hear some real experiences.

Just wondering about any opinions, good or bad, on this place. Seems to have some generous merit aid. Is it known for any programs in particular?

I don't know much, but last spring we had a student teacher at our high school from Truman State. I talked to her a few times at lunch - a smart and confident young woman, PE major, quite happy with her college experience. She did mention that she had a good scholarship.

What do you want to know? I visited with my H and DD last spring. The campus is pretty nice. Most dorms have been remodeled or in the process of being remodeled. One new dorm (2006) has suite style rooms. Student Union and recreation center are both newer and pretty nice. My daughter really liked the campus but didn't think much of the town although it has everything a college kid could want (major grocery store, multi-plex (8?) movie theatre, any kind of fast food you could want, Walmart, sporting goods store and some national chain restaurants.) She is going to apply but I don't think it is close to being her first choice.

My S (college junior) has two friends that are current students. They both love it and don't seem to mind the small town atmosphere.

Nice to hear these replies. I really want to go visit but it's a bit of a drive but if my son seriously considers it we will make the trip. With the stores M'sMom describes, the town has more going for it than I would have thought, since I have read on other posts about the horrible town. Is it just the size of the town that doesn't appeal to most or something in particular? Having things like fast food restaurants and a Wal-Mart and movie theater would be step up from our small town so that would seem very handy to me, but I know some towns can leave bad impressions for other reasons.

Am I right that it is somewhat selective to get into, also? I also wonder if we applied soon, would a scholarship decision come with the acceptance or would all that happen in the spring. I suppose they need to see what all candidates they have and then choose recipients? These are the kinds of things I have been wondering about. It might make the short list of the schools he will actually apply to.

I think they are fairly selective (average ACT is a 28). They do give good merit aid. Students are considered for the Combined Ability Scholarship automatically with their application. You can determine yourself whether or not you're eligible for the scholarship by plugging in your ACT and your GPA into a grid that you can find on the school website. See Truman Scholarships - Office of Admission - Truman State University.
There are also competitive scholarships. Again, you don't have to submit a separate scholarship application. Students are considered for these scholarships with their application. See Truman Scholarships - Office of Admission - Truman State University
You can also get $ if you live in a surrounding state (Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin) that particpates in the Midwest Student Exchange Program. If I remember correctly, you find out the amount of the merit award at the same time you get your acceptance decision. They have rolling admissions so that decision could come early in the fall.

I don't really know why my daugther didn't like the town. It is a lot smaller than the medium size city where we live and it is pretty isolated. The only town of any size is Columbia and it is 90 miles away. I think that if Truman was close to either KC or St. Louis that it would be one of her top schools.

Your answer was very helpful. I think we are definitely going to keep this place on our list. I am hoping Iowa would be one of the state in the Midwest Exchange Program since that is where we live but I'll check into it since it wasn't listed with the other states you put down. That would be our luck!

Just weird I had never heard of this before, just a state away from us, although we are extremely in northwest corner of Iowa, so it is a whole state away.
