Choosing schools was hard enough, but now I've picked my favorites, and I have a list of 14. I've tried many times to narrow it down, but it always comes back to these 14 schools. So I'm going to apply to them, but I was wondering...it'd be nice to know the typical results of those that apply to 6-8 colleges and those that apply to over 12 or so. Do people that apply to fewer schools have a higher acceptance rate than those that apply to more because they focus more, or does it really not take that long to do apps?

If most people were getting rejected to like over half of their schools when they applied to a bunch, I'd probably be opted to apply to fewer (and be forced to cut some of my favorites).

Logic would assume that two people with the same amount of time at their hands, but if one has six apps, and the other has 12 apps that the one with six apps would write must stronger apps since he has more time to devote for each individual app. However, it really depends on if you're willing to work on them hard enough [and if many of them are common apps]. On a personal note, I went twelve for twelve, so regardless of if I am an exception, it is possible.

wow that is awesome. how much time, on average, did you dedicate to each app? I will put my heart into all of them, but like I'm saying, I have a lot of stuff going on this next semester and don't want to be burnt out when it comes time to do my favorite school's app.

I totally know where you're coming from when you say you have no time [had work 15 hrs/wk plus 5 AP classes and five major EC's], but anyway, um it depends on the app. Overall I did the common app for about two hours plus another, oh about another hour and a half for my common app [Had my teacher edit it, so I didn't bother much on revising, plus I hate editing personally]. And then I had my MIT app which took around four hours, and then all of the supplements took about an hour and a half to handwrite [I mailed in everything]. And then I had four short essays [Tufts and Princeton] that took about a half hour for each and then my Harvey Mudd essay took about an hour and a half. So overall about 12.5 hours, though I didn't need to do anything but the common app and basic supplements for eight of the twelve. Though, for Harvard and Yale I didn't bother with the optional essays on account of time.

wow ok that really doesn't sound bad AT ALL for 12 schools. And the fact that you got in to all gives me some confidence in allotting that much time. Thanks for your help. I'll stick with all 13 (I recounted :) though I had 14 but I was wrong).

So I'm guessing by your screenname/profile thing
NJ --> MA
you're going to Harvard? Or MIT?

the first, I didn't really enjoy the campus atmosphere at MIT, just felt it wasn't for me, but yeah...
