How many schools are you applying to?

I was filling out a few supplementary questions on the common app when I discovered this question. I'm not exactly sure how many schools I'm applying to (maybe 8). Should I put down this number? Can the colleges verify it?
I may apply to as many as 12, but I don't have a final, complete number.

Going to cost a lot of money to send it to that many, right? I'm applying to like 10, with 3 of them outside the Common App.

Yes, those application fees can really add up.

Hard to imagine some family paying over $1000 just to apply to college. But then again colleges would be overwhelmed if there was no fee because then people would apply for the heck of it on common app.

True. This is how colleges increase their profit.

I guess putting down my 12 colleges wouldn't work against me then, on the common app? Would it appear as though I'm not "serious" about this specific school?

Can you imagine though how many applications the Ivies would get through the common app? I originally had Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Brown but then I realized that I probably wouldn't get accepted(but I still could), but I've never been to them so why should I spend the $300+? Practically everyone would apply for the heck of it. But I agree the fee really hammers some families, and what might have been some small idea by a college a while back has turned into a huge business now.

You've hit the bull's eye! Many colleges are going SAT optional simply to increase the flow of applications entering their inbox. It's a brilliant theory...indeed!

Yeah but I think they also see a lot of people with 2100s just not doing all that well in college. They think that a high SAT score would make up for the low GPA but the student still does bad and the university doesn't improve. But I think they also see a lot of potential amazing students go down because of their SAT scores. I'm #1 in my class and I had a 1230/1600 on the SAT, and I could have really ruined myself with that until I got 1320/1600 and eventually 31 on the ACT(which is almost a 1400). All I'm saying is that they know that there are plenty of good students who do bad on standardized tests so it'll attract more of them. I mean yeah with the way the economy is going, colleges are going to struggle with money and scholarships so they're trying to get as much money, who knows.

As of now, I think I'm applying to 6:

Florida State, U of Central Florida, U of South Florida, Pepperdine, San Diego State, and U of San Diego.

The FL schools are $30 an app, but I think that the CA schools I'm applying to are in the $50-$60 range.

3 or 4 UCs
5 Common App
1 outside both.

Great! Many of my friends are only applying to 4 or 5 colleges. I guess 10 isn't too out of my range then.

What are UCs exactly? California universities?

I'm applying to 18, but I have fee waivers for most of them.

Yeah. UCs are the University of Californias.
