Hey, I'm currently a sophomore at a public high school at Houston, Texas. I'm curious to see if I'm on the right track to get into Harvard and eventually Harvard Law School.

I am currently taking the highest possible classes available for sophomores at my high school (chemistry, algebra II, etc.). I play basketball and lacrosse and will be lettering in both sports. I'm in a club called Humanities, which examines different literary/cultural works (movies, books, poems) and discusses them. I am in an organization which takes on a different community service project for a day each month. Excluding the class I have for basketball and considering the 5 point scale for Pre-AP/AP classes, I had a 4.4 GPA last year and thus far have a 5.0 this year (I'm not exactly sure as to how the GPA system works, so I may be wrong - however, I've been told that both Pre-AP and AP classes are on a 5 point scale, and I would assume that basketball isn't a factor in determining one's GPA). Am I on the right track, and what should I look to do in the near future to improve my chances? Thank you in advance.

Try to get some leadership positions in your ECs, make sure your grades and SATs are high...you'll have a shot....its really way too early to tell right now tho......good luck.

I said this on another similar thread, but to reiterate - you are 1 year + into high school, with 2 years to go before you apply anywhere. No one looks compelling at this point in their career. Focus on excelling in a couple of areas you enjoy - beyond the school and local level. What you make of your next 2 years is what matters. You are just starting out.

You're on the right track, but I agree, it's much, much too early to be worrying about law school. Things you might do - not to get into college - but for yourself. Think about what interests you and take it to the next level. Do you like to write? Maybe try writing some things and seeing if you can get them published. (Even if it's only in your high school literary magazine.) Make your summers count. I interned at a political magazine, took art classes and had a job putting up exhibits at a library various summers. On the whole, I think it's better to do a couple of things really well, than a lot of things not so well.

After reading this, I really didn't want to reply. But still, the best thing you can do is: EXPLORE and DO WHAT YOU LIKE MOST and DO YOUR BEST IN CLASSES. Don't worry about colleges too much as a sophomore.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I understand, I'm just a bit apprehensive about how I'm doing right now and I want to make sure that I do all I can do to be on the right track.

If you have talent at lacrosse and want to play at the D1 level, you should start attending some of the premier lacrosse camps in the East. Harvard is always looking for outstanding lacrosse players that can get admitted on GPA alone. In fact all Ivy league schools have to follow an academic point system for their athletic program admissions. The lacrosse players at Harvard, had great to outstanding academic credentials, strong SAT's and were outstanding high school players. Having a coach on your side during the Harvard application process can be a big benefit. BUT, you have to love lacrosse because it is a huge commitment at the D1 level.
