Hey CC! Next year, I’m going to be President of my school’s Math Club, but our club is becoming less and less popular We need new members, especially underclassmen (see below for why), and I don’t know how to go about doing this.
Here are some of the areas we need to improve on:
Funds: Math Club is losing funds, and we need these to continue participating in competitions. Club dues don’t bring in much revenue, so we’ll need to have a fundraiser (any ideas for this? People at my school don’t really participate in activities, so something like a math contest wouldn’t work)
Membership: This is a dire issue - we need underclassmen to compete at competitions, but most members are upperclassmen. I’m thinking of recruiting among the freshmen and middle schoolers, but do you have any other suggestions?
Contests: We need to broaden the scope of math contests we participate in (currently, we take the AMC 12 and participate in a local competition). I have a few ideas for other competitions, but the problem is, we need people to actually participate in them. Do you have any suggestions for how to increase involvement?
I really don’t want the club to decline under my leadership, so I need some ideas. Thanks in advance!
You might also consider the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling. My daughter’s school got over 70 students a year participating. It was a weekend event promoted by math teachers and supervised by parent volunteers. You can find more info here: http://www.comap.com/highschool/contests/himcm/index.html
@bopper, we do send a school announcement when we place in a competition - the lady who manages announcements is so excited whenever we do well! I’ll definitely ask the math teachers to promote math club in classes. The Pi Day fundraiser sounds fun - I’ll bring it up to the rest of the club!
