Hello all,

I just wanted to know what other math clubs do for activities. My school is not very math friendly so the club has about 10 people in it, but only 6 that are consistent. We only do contests once a month, and we meet weekly just to go over problems (which evidently gets boring for many).

I wanted to know what other activities a math club could do so we could "spice" things up in my school. I was looking at Mu Alpha Theta but the coordinator said that we would need to come up with activities in order to make it a serious, constant things.

Any ideas?

Hello.

I do Math Team and we compete once a month. There are 15 students in the club, 10 are pretty consistent.

Normally, there aren’t many competitions so in the club (we meet once a week) we go over abstract mathematical things or the such (things that the school looks over in math classes). Sometimes we go and help the elementary and middle schools with math-related activities. Other than that, we just hang out and all the everyone (everyone is asian except me) draws anime while I watch and attempt to replicate their drawings. (mine end up very realistic)

Well for I guess “problem” meetings, it would be interesting to introduce some less school-standard topics in mathematics (combinatorics, game theory, etc.) that usually come off as more fun and less boring than most school topics.

For competitions, if you can attend competitions like HMMT, PUMaC, SMT, or ARML, they’re usually really fun (also really difficult). They’re once/year, but they’re huge events that will definitely be a wonderful experience. Most of the other competitions (like Mu Alpha Theta, Mandelbrot, etc.) don’t really come off to me as “fun,” but more as taking tests in a dark stingy room. The AMCs, I guess, are an exception.

Also, for anything math-related, you should check out artofproblemsolving.org for a wealth of information and a huge community.

my teacher just started a math club and there are like only 5 of us and we are all sophomores. We learned basic calculator programming(which was pretty fun and interesting) and also learned about interesting topics like number theory, etc by watching numberphile videos. We are looking into some math competitions to enter in.
