Hello,
I’m an incoming AU freshman and I’m still not sure what I want to do that will lead to a good career. Right now I want to do a double major in history and political science, with a possible minor in philosophy, statistics, or international relations. However, I feel like double majoring in international relations with political science would be more beneficial. Also, and this is random, but I am also interested in chemistry and biochemistry, but I am pretty sure a minor in either of those would not fit at all with history and/or political science. My question is, which option would be best for me? For the record, I am very good at history and political science, an okay at best public speaker, and I was pretty good at AP chem last year (not the best, but far from the worst.) However, I haven’t taken a biology class in two years, nor have I taken calculus yet and I am eh at math, but that’s from not trying at all in high school.

Of course only you can decide what is best for you, but as a current AU student I can give you some insight to the programs.

It sounds like you want to keep Poli Sci as a primary major - it’s a good program so kudos on admission/ choice. In terms of second major or minor, I would say given your interest in both the social sciences and biochem, I would suggest looking at the Environmental Studies major. It combines biology, chemistry, more specific environmental science classes, and quite a few courses in policy and global environmental politics (some of which would overlap with a poli sci degree, meaning you can double count the credits.) The major is basically designed to combine science and policy…there is some wiggle room with it, so you can persue either more advanced science courses or more advanced policy courses - or a little of both.

I wouldnt worry about a minor not quite fitting. A lot of the time grad schools/employers actually like a minor that contrasts with the major - it shows that you have skills in vastly different areas.

History is a small major (39 credits I believe as opposed to Poli Sci which is 58 credit) so it’s a fairly easy one to double major in if you choose.

Hope this helps!
