I'm currently attending SDSU and I love it here.

savedbythebell7, what is it like at SDSU? Where are you from? What other schools did you consider before choosing SDSU?

savedbythebell7, how is the caliber of students? Professors?

I'm originally from Northern California, SF Bay Area. I had intended on going to UCSB, but unfortunately I was rejected and SDSU seemed like my next closest bet to a UCSB type campus. First and foremost, i've noticed different calibur of students in the different years. You can tell that the 5th years aren't nearly as studious as the freshmen. Most people in my dorms seem to be pretty focused on their school work, the dorms have study lounges, that started off in the beginning of the year as poker lounges but sooned developed into actual study lounges, people tend to use them pretty consistently for school work. Most people i've met at SDSU are very outgoing and friendly to talk to. When I visited the campus originally I was blown away by it, it gave me a good feeling, that feeling has stuck with me. I had two very excellent history professors, and every single one of my teachers seemed to love their work and were very intriguing/always willing to help during office hours or after class, prior to picking classes you can go to www.ratemyprofessor.com (SDSU has the largest amount of comments on the site) and you can choose wonderful professors via that.

By the way, xtx, i chose SDSU over UCI and UCSC, mainly because SDSU has a more renowned and better connected business school in the southern california business world. I joined the finance and investment society, they've had many speakers come talk to us, like the lead portfolio manager at Brandes (SDSU grad), the guy who created brandes, they control over a billion dollars in assets is an SDSU grad. The founder of costco, and many other very high ups in the San Diego area are graduates, in 2009 SDSU will be putting in a incredible new business facilitiy, you can go on the www.sdsu.edu website and find pictures of it, it's incredible. I've found that SDSU has a deep rooted prescence in the business world of San Diego, which is where I hope to someday live. I feel like i'm giving a really biased impression of SDSU, but in all honesty, I can't really say too many bad things about it, i mean i'm trying but Im honestly not coming up with anything negative to say.

i luv the school the more and more i learn about it. wow i hope i get in... soooooo many people are applying this year.

savedbythebell, how would you describe the social life?

The social life is unrivaled. Everyone seems awfully social.

Thanks so much for answering all my questions :)

Hi, savedbythebell7, I have some questions.

SDSU is a modest party school, not like UCSB? School spirit is high?

How's its engineering program, especially electrical engineering?

How's its dorm life, availablibilty of dorms? How expensive to get outside rental apratments?

Would you give some info on AF ROTC, such as how many times the cadets have physical excercise, and how many hours they spend, etc.? Roughly how many cadets in SDSU?

Classes are too big, or still there are lots of adequate classes?

How about accessability to professors?

How about the campus? Is it too big and crowded?

Thanks alot!

I was just accepted to SDSU and plan on going into business- hows the business program?

wait...u heard already?!

Pixiedancer, if you calculate your "index" you can get a pretty good idea if you'll be accepted. Since you're from California, you calculate your "UC/CSU" GPA, multiply that by 800, and add your SAT1 score. If the total is over 4000 you're probably going to be accepted. 80% of the acceptances are based on just that.

Ouch! My bad. The cutoff last year was about 3725. I don't know where I got 4000. I hope I didn't give you a heart attack.

yeah it does go over 4000, but still i'm not getting confident only becuase i have to keep in mind how many people are actually applying. i'm not doubting how qualified i am or anything.

I haven't heard yet. Only SJSU and SFSU have responded (accepted). I applied in October.

that's awesome!!! which one is ur first choice?

are u applying to any schools besides cal states

yeah thats not entirely true what kluge said, it seems like it would stand true, but I know people in the 3800+ range that were rejected, mainly just because of the huge application base, they can't accept everyone, this year it's even going to be tougher. That index and acceptance rate is more true at the other states. Although, what you said definitely USED to be the case at SDSU.

As for a response to Sam:
1. SDSU is a modest party school, not like UCSB? School spirit is high?
UCSB tends to be more of a party school, from what i've noticed. San Diego state does have lots of school spirit, people are proud to be aztecs.

How's its engineering program, especially electrical engineering?
I don't know all that much about the engineering program. It's a good backup school to Cal Poly for engineering though.

How's its dorm life, availablibilty of dorms? How expensive to get outside rental apratments?
Dorm life is great, everything is within a close proximity to the dorms, the dorms tend to be very social, so you'll meet lots of people quickly. The availibility of the dorms is based on how quickly you send in your dorm information, but they seem to be able to accomodate dorm spots to most freshmen.

Would you give some info on AF ROTC, such as how many times the cadets have physical excercise, and how many hours they spend, etc.? Roughly how many cadets in SDSU?
I don't know much about the AF ROTC here at state, but there seems to be a pretty good prescence of them on campus.

Classes are too big, or still there are lots of adequate classes?
There are larger classes and smaller more adequate classes, it depends on your choosing.

How about accessability to professors?
Professors, seem to love to extend a helping hand to anyone who wants it.

How about the campus? Is it too big and crowded?
Initially, because its such a large school, i thought i'd be overwhelmed, but when you're walking to class from day to day, it seems smaller, because everything is really centralized. Whenever I walk to and from classes, I always see people I know.

If you have anymore questions just let me know.

SDSU has a very STRONG business prescence in the San Diego area, it's very deep-rooted with the community and tradition oriented. The reputation of SDSU's business program is great in California. Just to give an example, i'd prefer to go to SDSU and major in Business then go to UCSD and major in Economics. This is primarily because San Diego State's business program is very well endowed, SDSU has cranked out many many CEO's in the last 40 years. The business program (and communications) are essentially the flagship programs at SDSU and the faculty prides themselves in these two specific areas of learning. The international business program is ranked 7th in the world.

Thank you, saved for your kind info. It appears to me that SDSU is getting higher reputation every year!!
