I’ve seen this be alluded to several times, and it is a very attractive option. For example, if I got my AS at a CC in New York, but had a subpar GPA, and wanted to go into graduate school, would I “reset” my GPA by going to school in Florida?
I had one bad semester my freshman year where I failed all my classes except one. Other than that I’ve been an A/B student, in fact, without that semester I’d have a 3.72. Where I stand, I’m not even at a 3.0.
I’m currently enrolled at UTK, but I think I may have to go to an out of state school if I want to be competitive for grad school. Thanks.
When you apply to grad school, you will be required to submit all of your transcripts. How each grad school evaluates those records will be up to them. Generally speaking, newer, better grades will count for more than older, bad grades. Lots of people overcome bad freshmen years and go on to do well in college and in life.
What is so wrong with UTK that makes you think you need to transfer again in order to be able to get into grad school? Go talk with your advisor and other faculty members in your department about your long-range goals. They will have useful ideas for you.
No, it’s just that going into UTK I now have a 2.7, someone said that for example, if I went to UVA or some other school that wasn’t in UTK I would have a neutral GPA as if I had just entered college. I also read that online, but I haven’t been able to find anything for certain. I calculated that if I have a 4.0 for the next 4 semesters, I will still only finish with a 3.3, and that isn’t too competitive for grad school imo. I’m sure I’ll do above average on the GRE, but I don’t know if a good score can carry me alone.
It will reset as in your GPA will start at 0.00 at your new school. However, grad schools will see your old GPA and take that information into consideration. There’s no guarantee that getting a higher GPA at UVA will get you into grad school, if you can transfer anywhere with a sub 3.0.
ETA: Do you see what I’m saying here? I don’t think a 4.0 at UVA will be seen as more fondly than grade improvement at UTK. If you have a strong upward trend I don’t think the school will matter. Plus, I don’t think you will be able to have much success transferring with your current GPA. Even so…a new environment, possibly setting you back a semester or two, having to adjust to new college life is it really worth it?
That is my GPA transferring out of CC. I’ve never been to a University. UTK accepted me in short order, my ACT was a 29, so I think I could get into another decent school without much fuss, as the last 4 semesters I’ve averaged a 3.65.
Does UVA mean University of Virginia? that’s probably not happening.
What kind of grad school are you looking at? For many fields, what will matter most is your GPA in your major, then your overall GPA (doesn’t apply to the professional schools, eg, law, medicine).
