If June 2023 job market is a bust - when’s a good time to apply for a masters program?

If nothing turns up by the end of summer, would the typical course be to apply for grade school in the fall and then start the program the following fall? In this case it would be fall 2024. Or is grad school more flexible in its admissions schedules and start dates? Considering a data science or statistics MS.

That’s a big if and highly unlikely. Right now for the May grads it’s very strong.

There are fixed date programs and some that start with flexible dates.

It depends on the major but for some work experience and maturity are needed to get into grad school.

I would think for the majors you listed you would want experience first if possible. Your job prospects will be much better.

I think you have to plan for a job or school - not both. Focus your time on meeting your desire.

This assumes you are domestic and don’t need visa support etc.

Good luck.

Fortunately, there is quite a bit of work history including a year as a part time Data Engineer at a medical firm. (Although there’s no opportunity to transition to FTE there.) Thank you for the insight.

If you want a job and can’t find one, put a search on indeed for what you want. My son has had a lot of interviews with major companies doing this. Like ‘a lot’!!! Granted he’s engineering…but he’s not using the school that much … it’s on his own via indeed. Others find jobs on LinkedIn.

Why not make contingent plans now, just in case? Apply now for 2-3 choice masters programs. Many applications are due by the end of this or next month. You wouldn’t need to accept an offer typically until May. All it would cost you would be a few hundred dollars and the time needed to put the applications together. Online programs typically have later application/acceptance dates.

My youngest son graduated in engineering in December 2020 and had several great interviews scheduled. Then COVID and all interviews were cancelled. Fortunately, he did have time to apply to several online masters programs and pick one. He had a good start when the economy picked up and had a leg up on the competition with his progress towards a masters degree. He got a great job in March 2021.

Masters program was my kid back up plan in 2016, I thought for sure there’s a recession coming, luckily that didn’t happen.

I just think - there are TONS of jobs out there. My son is stressed because - on Monday, he has three companies - and because he gave them all the same window, they all chose the same time - and how to extricate.

And he’s mad they alll want you in 1-3 days, no notice, etc.

If you plan for grad school, you’ll end up (my opinion) in grad school - self fulfilling prophecy.

if you want a job, hit indeed, set up a daily search and they’ll email you jobs and apply to the ones of interest.

There’s no reason that a grad, especially one with experience, won’t find a job. The unemployment rate, even in tech, is insanely low.
