So far I have gotten two financial aid letters telling me I have to go to some website to accept it...does it mean that I will have to go there if I accepted it?

Also, if it doesn't mean I have to go there, does it mean they will then send me a final financial aid sheet detailing how much everything is and the total my parents will have to pay?

Financial aid from one school is usually only good for that school. If you accept it and decide later not to go, you can usually notify the financial aid office. I would recommend looking up each individual school though; none of the ones I applied to were rigid about it, but I understand that there might be others who take it as an implicit guarantee of enrollment.

Federal Direct Stafford Loan – Unsubsidized - 2000
Federal Work StudyJob - 2000
Grant Award - 30000

And it says I can accepted it, reduce it, or deny it.

So if I accepted it, they would expect me to attend their school?

Our kids were accepted to college in 2003 and 2006. They received multiple acceptances and financial aid packages. They didn’t accept ANYTHING until they made a decision about where they were attending college and then they accepted THAT package. If there is some deadline for acceptance of the finaid package that is before May 1, simply call the school and tell them you have not made a matriculation decision yet.

But did it tell you how much you were suppose to pay?

I figured if you accept it, then they’ll send another sheet with detail data on how much money you got and how much money you’re suppose to pay.

What if I accept the aid and then my parents are suppose to pay 25k a year…then what?

I’m confused because I figured how much my parents should pay should be considered not just how much money I’m getting.

Wait. You don’t need to accept the aid offer until you decide on a school. They’re not going to give it away to someone else or anything like that. If you need a breakdown of their package vs. their COA (cost of attendance), send email or call the financial aid office.

Acceptance day is May 1. Make sure you have all your admittances and all your financial aid packages before you make a decision – for some schools, that may take until April.

One thing to keep in mind is that at some schools Freshman housing fills up quickly. First come, first serve. So if you wait you may not be living where you want to be.

I plan to accept one of my aid packages since I once mistakenly had already accepted my admission to the school. If you decide not to attend notify admission and aid office.

Alright, I think I got it, but I want to make sure.

So I wait till I receive all my financial aid letters. Then I accept the aid to whichever school I plan to attend and tell the other schools that I’m not attending…correct?

Mr California: Pretty much. That said, I just saw that my daughter has one merit scholarship that has an acceptance date before May 1, so you may want to check on that. But even so, if her other packages were not in, we would write the school and tell them what someone else suggested – that she is still deciding and needed more time.

From my understanding it’s okay to accept their financial aid package, but if you decided that you no longer will be attending notify admission office and financial aid office.
