...does that mean that you will not receive any merit money from the school at all, or just not the full ride scholarship? Could you still receive a few thousand or some such sum with your acceptance letter?

Yes - just because you were not selected `for a merit scholarship does not preclude you from receiving other scholarships - grants or aid from washU. hat package will come as part of your acceptance package. maintain your hope - they can be quite generous.

Is that need-based aid or merit-based aid?

What amount are they generally?

they say it is a merit academic scholarship based on financial need. The amount varies based on your financial situation, but I thought my offer was pretty generous.

Hm, so if you have no need then you're pretty much screwed?

Our family had no need according to the FASFA but my son got a non-named scholarship through the engineering department. They considered him for the award based upon all the scholarship applications that he did submit. If need was also part of the equation, that was never stated.

Most of these subsequent awards tend to have an element of need associated with them. Although some of the awards can be non need based. Many of the subsequent awards tend to consider merit as part of the criteria. These awards also tend to use a much more flexible formula than FAFSA when determining awards. In addition to these awards there is also strictly need based financial aid available.

All in all, I think you will find that WashU goes “the extra mile” in assisting students with the finances they need to attend. My advice is work closely with the people in the financial aid office. They will do everything possible to make it work. Does it always work out? No , but it would not be for lack of effort on their part.

Little bit of a problem for me. I just got my acceptance letter to Wash U, but I didn't apply for scholarships, and I said that I wasn't planning on applying for financial aid on the Wash U admissions app. Does this preclude any possibility of getting aid? Can I still fill out a FAFSA and hope to receive money?
