would you ever risk or give your life for something or someone? I was just looking on the thread about how some innocent person was killed by a gang and it stimulated the idea of willingness. While this question is more general then anything, is there anything you would be willing to give up your life for, or at least something you would be willing to put it in harms way? The responses I received provoked me to think about what I was stating. While it's easy for me to confirm that I would undergo this action while sitting comfortably in front of a computer screen, when actually being placed in a situation in which my life is at risk, my opinions (and likely others) are subject to change. While I believe I would act in a certain way, does that necessarily mean I would, or is that just what I believe is the right thing to do, and therefore I state that I would do it? After pondering this, I'm under the impression that I would risk my life for certain people and beliefs. What are your thoughts on this? Have you ever considered this or have you ever been placed in any of these situations? How did you react? This is more of a reflection for me, but perhaps it can serve some purpose for some of you as well.

Nope, I wouldn’t confirm it either way.

The question is:

Do amphibians have scale-less or scaly skin?

I changed it. I suppose it’s more something applicable to me, but feel free to answer the question:)
^I don’t understand you’re statement/question. If you don’t see or find seriousness in this issue that’s completely fine. I just thought it was interesting haha, perhaps I’m the only one that finds it to be this way though.

Ok, real question.

A man walks into your math class, and points at you.
He pulls out a gun and tells you you have a choice. He will either shoot you and then leave the class, or he will shoot everyone single person in the class, and let you live.

Do you sacrifice yourself?

Yes, however, I would make sure everyone exited the class and I was left alone with the killer.

However, what my question was referring to is something that contrasts with yours. In this case, I’m sacraficing myself for all of the students in my class. My question was referring to any type of situation. Ex: Would people be willing to die for their family or religion? It’s more of a general question that can vary by situation.

Dieing for religion haha. I guess you can be martyr to a false, non-existant god. Spare society from the hypocrisy of religion.

I fail to comprehend what’s humorous about dying for a religion. I suppose it would be to those who aren’t religious?

Yes, I am an atheist, so the logic behind dying for religion makes absolutely no sense.

Sacraficing oneself for a larger group of people and\or family is a legitimate reason, however.

“I could die for you. But I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, live for you.”

Two different types of sacrifice. Maybe you could die for a stranger Wartsandall, but would you be able to live for one? Would you go so far for the sake of altruism?

one-AynRand-quote-a-day-keeps-the-communists-away

EDIT: I forgot which thread I was in. The communist reference was directed at another thread. It’s okay. It’s still relevant.

Can you give an example? I fail to comprehend what you mean by living for a stranger.

Oh pay me no mind :] I just finished rereading Ayn Rand’s Anthem (for an essay I have to write) and I was in the mood.

But the scene in the book is :
The woman tells a man who loves her that she would die for him for reasons of her own. But she would never be able to live for him. AKA: sell her soul, give up her own self, give up her way of life for him.

I’m not educated enough to give you a solid answer. But I am aware that there’s a distinction between these two ideas. Maybe I should write my essay on this :P

When an issue is presented to my attention, I find that writing helps reflect my ideas and view points. What I am about to say is completely my opinion and is more of me reflecting on this. My thoughts surrounding this:

You say that I would be dying for a stranger, yet through my beliefs, we are all individuals with similar features, brought together in one place. Can one then identify that we are all strangers? Again, I’m baffled by as to what you mean by living for someone. My beliefs suggest that I was placed on this earth by one person, and am therefore living my life for this one person. If this person decided to place me on this earth to guide an alternative individual, then I would be willing to live and guide that one individual.

I would have gone on to talk about this longer, and in more depth, but my mom came in my room and started talking to me lol. Therefore, this is a response before you just posted yours. O, that’s ok, I appreciate the question. I think you should write about it:> lol I love reflecting on intelligent questions!:)

Write a “what is your personal philosophy” essay about Ayn Rand. The adcoms will be shocked by your originality.

For the greater good of all mankind. Sure.

@ IPlayNeo’s gun question:

It doesn’t apply to me because STATISTICS ISNT MATH!!! HAHAHAHAH

Or at least that’s what my ex-Calc BC teacher said.

Harvard, here I come :P

haha. Never happening. She’s a horrible writer with a legion of robot followers behind her. I don’t think she’ll be particularly upset if I don’t write an app essay about her. I already know two people who made her their common app essay topic.
