Hi! I'm an Indiana senior who's mainly looking at IUB as a safety. However, their research programs appear amazing. I don't quite qualify for the Hutton Honors Program (I plan to appeal, but if I don't get in I'll apply after my fall semester) but I think I have a good chance at the IFLE or STARS programs.

But a few questions for those who hopefully were in those programs:
-Are the two programs totally exclusive? Meaning I can't be in both at the same time?
-If yes to above, which programs would you consider to be the most beneficial?
-What were your stats for getting into the program?
-Was the research interesting and beneficial?
-How's the faculty?

I know both are pretty compettive; some of my friends who were Honors students (and full-ride scholarship recipients) did not get an interview for the programs.

I may sound a bit harsh. If you are not even a possible Hutton honors candidate, IUB is not a safety school for you. IFLE and STAR are great programs for the top STEM students. IFLE students have a chance to work in a lab for six weeks and earn $1000.xx in the summer before their 1st Fall semester. Room and board are covered.

Actually, looking at the Hutton Honors College again, I could be a possible.

“When students apply for admission to IU, whichever cumulative GPA on the student’s transcript is higher (weighted or unweighted) will be considered for admission and scholarship consideration.”

My weighted GPA is 4.34, and that’s the specific gpa that shows up on my transcript (unweighted is about 3.7, which is due to having Bs first semester of freshman year since I moved from a different country and was having trouble adjusting). My ACT is a 32 (first try, might retake in September) and I’m in the top 9% of my class.

Also, the STARS webpage states “Competitive applicants for the SSA will have a minimum SAT score of 1350 (Critical Reading and Math) or an ACT score of 31 (Composite) in addition to a minimum GPA of 3.800 on a 4.0 scale or a rank within the top 10% of their graduating class.”

I’m pretty sure IUB is an appropriate safety for me Since I plan to apply for schools with about ~30% acceptance rates.
