So i live in Brazil and go to a british school here. We take IGCSEs and IBs. All standard. I was wondering if i was wanting to go to a good university in America (such as UCLA, Yale etc ivy league) i need more than good IB and IGCSE grades. I heard about gpa and that it is the average grades you get in your school report. My school report is from 1 to 10, 10 being the highes my average is about 7 which is pretty average nothing good. But the thing is i did not think those grades mattered so i didnt try too hard because it does not really prove your capabilities most of that report grade is homework and some tests. I got all As on my IGCSEs and if i get good IBs will i be able to go to a good university? Or will my report gpa dissapoint me? thank you in advance

IGCSES All As but GPA really low due to lack of care towards school report( didn't know it mattered)

Converting Brazil’s grades to America’s GPA system isn’t something we know how to do; figuring it out is your job. That said, any student who doesn’t try to hard is probably not cutout for America’s most elite universities. These schools reject between eighty and ninety percent of American students with perfect GPA’s, and the bar international kids have to clear is even higher.

Take the SAT to see where you stand. If you’re below a 2200 you’re not really going to be competitive even if you bring your grades up. If you do score 2200+, remember that test scores aren’t everything and Princeton for example rejects 4 in 5 students with 2300+ scores. You also need extraordinary extracurricular service and achievement.

You don’t have to go to an Ivy League school to be successful.
