Hello.
So I currently don’t really understand the whole IGETC and CSU breadth requirements.
For my predicament, some schools don’t require it like CSU Fullerton (for Computer Science), and others that do like the UCs
Should I finish it in my CC? I kind of don’t want to because I want to have some gen ed to do later on.
But I have heard a rumor that certain schools don’t accept partial IGETC or CSU Breadths? And if they don’t accept partial then they won’t accept the credits. I really don’t understand how this works, for CSULB assist says I need around 42 credits, not including Gen Ed.
I have some Gen Ed done like.
2nd Language
Health
English 101
Government
and Psych
Currently taking History
And well since I am STEM ill do the remaining math, science for my major as a requirement anyways.
That would leave me with, Communications, an Art Class of some sort, and English 103. So can I just not take Communications and Art, or are they required? I took an art and speech college class in high school offered by a private university called ‘Alliant’, but I am unsure if those credits count.
But anyways I would only need 2 classes since I need English 103.
Thanks.
Have you checked with your CC advisor about your questions?
IGETC is a series of courses that prospective transfer students from California Community Colleges may use to satisfy the lower -division/general education breadth requirements at both the California State University and the University of California.
The CSU General Education-Breadth (GE-Breadth) program allows California Community College transfer students to fulfill lower-division general education requirements for any CSU campus prior to transfer. This curriculum provides an alternative to the IGETC requirements and can be a good option if you know you want to transfer to a CSU but don’t know which campus you will attend, or if you know which campus you will attend but don’t know which major you will pursue.
If you are unsure where you will be applying or if you are applying to both CSU’s and UC’s, then doing IGETC sounds like a better option however, for CS it is not recommended for many campuses.

There are some differences in GE requirements between the CSU’s and UC’s so IGETC seems to fulfill both.
For the CSU’s, the “Golden 4” is very important to be completed prior to applying to give you the best chance at your target schools.
Best of luck and hopefully you can navigate through this GE information.
IGETC is more similar to CSU GE requirements than the more varied GE requirements found at UCs (which may vary by division, or residential college at UCSC and UCSD). A few UC divisions do not accept IGETC in fulfillment of GE requirements (e.g. UCB business and UCB engineering). There are slight differences between IGETC for CSU (requires oral communication) and IGETC for UC (requires foreign language).
If you do not complete IGETC before transfer (or it is not accepted as noted above), you will have to complete the GE requirements of the campus you transfer to in order to graduate. However, any courses you take at CC can still be counted toward those GE requirements if they articulate to matching courses on http://www.assist.org (e.g. a history course taken at CC before transfer can fulfill a history GE requirement, or a GE requirement that accepts a history course).
Also, if you do not complete IGETC before transfer, CSUs and UCs may still require some GE-type courses before transfer (e.g. the “golden four” for any CSU).
