Hi there, I am an applied mathematics major, and apply to Berkeley for Fall 06.

I know there are several ways to fulfill the breadth requirements. One is IGETC, and the other is L&S requirements. Could I combine these two to satisfy the requirements?

I already finished English composition (introduction to Literature), which satisfies the R1B English category, I think. Do I need to take English critical thinking to complete the IGETC?

It sounds like I am trying to complete the two requirements, however, I will not complete neither of them. I finished the english part of the letter and science requirement, and the other breadth areas of the IGETC. I thought I was done with the GE requirements, but yesterday when i filled out the update form of berkeley, I had to leave blank with the "English critical thinking", and filled the l&S requirement R1B with "Introduction of Lit". therefore, the form turned out one part IGETC, and the other part of l&s. Is it acceptable?

IGETC requires the Critical thinking, but I took other english course instead. Do I need to take the critical thinking to get an IGETC certification? My question is: is it necessary to get a certification prior to transfer?

is it necessary to get a certification prior to transfer?

yes.

You cannot "combine" IGETC and the L&S requirements; it's one or the other. You should enroll in a class for spring that fulfills the critical thinking requirement . Or you should go the L&S track if you can satisfy all the L&S requirements.

L&S requirements is easier to satisfy because the seven-course breadth requirement "must be completed before graduation from Berkeley."
thus, i don't need to finish all the breadth requirements before transfering, am i wrong? actually, there is only one course left.

if I follow the l&s requirements, where should I put all my GE classes in the update form of berkeley? there are only blanks for the IGETC.

uhh.. i think the L&S completion by graduation is for berkeley students who went since they were freshman... i dunno anyone at my CC doing L&S... seems IGETC is standard. if all u need is 1 english class u should add it this semester so as to avoid screwing urself over. i highly suggest u call berkeley admissions and clear up the requirement as well as consulting ur college counselor.

"There are three ways to fulfill the breadth requirements necessary for admission to the College of Letters & Science (L & S): IGETC certification(for transfers from California community colleges only); or UC Reciprocity* (for transfers from another UC campus only); or completion of L & S Requirements. "

Per assist.org:

This major is offered by the College of Letters and Science (L&S). You must
complete either: (1) the L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign
Language, and Quantitative Reasoning or (2) IGETC by the end of the spring term
that precedes fall enrollment at Berkeley.
