A little background: I applied to 4 UC's (Berkeley, UCLA, SD, SB) for the Fall '06 term. I have a 3.29 gpa and not too many EC's. I don't think theres any chance in hell I get into L.A. or Berkeley, but I'm expecting to get into SB and SD.

I have a (TAG) with UCSD, but I'm also doing IGETC to fulfill the requirements for the other schools (SB, mostly). My question is this: Say I finish my TAG requirements for UCSD...do I still have to also finish the IGETC requirements in order to be eligible to transfer to SD? There are some classes in IGETC that are not on my TAG, so it would be a major help if I only had to concentrate on TAG and not both IGETC and TAG. (i.e. I haven't done the mathematical concepts/quantitative reasoning section)

You only need to finish the TAG core requirements for UCSD. Think of it this way, basically there are 2 paths you can take to get to UCSD: TAG or IGETC. Alternatively, TAG and IGETC are both contracts. You are already fulfilling the requirements for the TAG contract thus you do not need to fulfill the IGETC requirements as well. If you are absolutely set on going to UCSD, I would say stick with the TAG contract since it gurantees you admission. However, if you are still pending on UCSB then you will also need to either do IGETC or UCSB's transfer gurantee contract.

Yep, you can do one or the other to satisfy general ed requirements.

You will obviously need to concentrate on both if you want to get into Santa Barbara and SD. But only TAG is necessary to fulfill general ed for SD. You don't need IGETC if you do TAG for the purpose of getting into SD.

Now that I think of it, who would bother doing TAG and UCSB's transfer agreement IF they are vastly different? In other words, you MIGHT be doing twice as work to fulfill the requirements on both contracts. In that case, I would say do IGETC and get a kick butt GPA.

Ok Nikkei, except that has nothing to do with this guy's situation. And for a lot of others, they could get into TAG with UCSD but be rejected without it, in which case following TAG is very important.

Sure everyone should do IGETC and get a "kick butt" GPA...then you don't need transfer agreements for anywhere.

i was close to doing tag in the first semester, i was pretty nervous about how i would do in my science classes. But then i found out i would have to do 10 units of foreign language and i said forget it...
