Alright so I'm attending a CCC in the fall as a freshman and I plan to do the chemical biology major and want to get into Berkeley. I have bee doing research and almost everyone says Berkeley won't even consider you without completing the IGETC and all major pre reqs. I'm a little confused though, I went on assist.com and got all of the transferable courses for my major, do I have to complete ALL of those to even have a chance besides the absolutely required ones for my major, and on top of the IGETC?! Because that is an overwhelming amount of units to complete and I want to be done in 2 years for transfer. I met with a counselor today at my CC and she seemed clueless as to what she was doing. Any help is appreciated!

Bump please

You don’t have to have IGETC and all pre-reqs completed to gain admissions. But depending on the UC you try to get into and the major, they are what you need to be competitive. So for Berkeley, you do need those to be competitive. For a place like Davis you could get away with missing a couple classes. Everyone that I know that’s majoring in Bio/Chem are taking three years. It’s tough to get IGETC and almost a dozen science classes within two years. Really think long and hard about how long you want to spend at your CC. Don’t pack your classes in your first semester, and then get overwhelmed and deciding to take three years. It’s best to know before you go.

The benefit of a CC is how cheap it is. Spending an extra year will cost next to nothing. And having an easier schedule will make it more manageable to get that A.

And a warning about trying to get into Berkeley. A lot of people come to the CC saying they’re going to change, that they’re going to get a 4.0 by studying really hard. Chances are if you weren’t a 4.0 student in high school, you won’t be a 4.0 at your CC. Make sure you have an obtainable goal. Something like Davis for example. It’s a lot easier to get into, but bio/chem majors are very strong. You could skim on IGECT and not get all the major pre reqs and still have a chance of getting in. And if you don’t, you could just finish the rest in the following year.

But anyways, sit down and really consider what kind of student you’ll be, and make sure to have realistic goals. Best of luck.

Screw IGETC. I say finish your pre reqs first and then finish IGETC if you have time/room for it. Major pre reqs outweigh IGETC. Saying this from experience, my friend who completed IGETC but was missing pre req classes was denied to all UCs except San Diego. (he had a 3.85ish). I’ve been accepted to cal and all the other schools by completing major pre reqs with while maintaining a high GPA. I think that is what you should aim for. Leave IGETC for last. Btw sorry for my crappy typing. I’m on my phone.

IGETC is not required to transfer to the chemical biology major at Berkeley. Note that this major is in the College of Chemistry at Berkeley. If you do complete the entire IGETC pattern, it does count for the reading and composition and foreign language requirements for the major. See [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for more information.

Note that majors in the College of Letters and Science at Berkeley (e.g. molecular and cell biology) do require completion of either IGETC or several College of Letters and Science requirements before transfer. Again, see [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for more information. The College of Letters and Science at Berkeley does allow IGETC to fulfill additional breadth requirements.

Note that the major requirements for chemical biology do cover the following IGETC categories (as listed here: [Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/requirements/additional-requirements/igetc/index.html) ):

English communication.

Mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning.

Physical and biological sciences.

If you want to complete IGETC, here is what remains:

Arts and humanities: 3 courses (at least 1 each of arts and humanities) of 9 semester units

Social and behavioral sciences: 3 courses of 9 semester units

Language other than English

Note that the chemical biology major does have a foreign language requirement and a humanities and social studies breadth requirement: http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/degree_programs/chem_bio_major/lower_division_courses.php
