I know that we officially pick our schedules at NSO, but I’m under the impression that I should come prepared with a planned schedule in mind in order to make the process easier. I’ve been using the iGPS student planning system and the degree map for my major in order to determine what classes I should take Fall 2018. The thing is, I think I have enough AP credits to pass out of a lot of these classes. Out of the 5 classes I should take first semester, I pass out of 3 of them (leaving 2 left over), and of the 5 I take second semester, I pass out of 2 (leaving 3 left over). So, my question is, can I go to NSO with my planned schedule consisting of those 5 left over classes even though my degree map states I should be taking some of them first semester and some of them second semester?
The degree maps are simply a guideline. As long as you fulfill the prerequisites for the classes you want, it doesn’t matter what order you take them. It’s good that you are ahead of the map and good work planning a schedule in advance!
Let me know if you have any specific questions about scheduling. I can also look over your proposed schedule if you want. (I will be a senior in Kelley). I would suggest getting your gen eds out of the way as early as possible. If you are in Kelley, fill in the remaining classes with I-Core prereqs. If you aren’t in Kelley, ignore this paragraph, but the first paragraph applies to any major.
Kelley direct admit and going to NSO in July. I would welcome thoughts about the value (if any) of taking the optional calculus placement exam with respect to M119. I thought I saw something somewhere on this site but can’t find it right now. Or, would that lead to a harder calculus placement when M119 is all that is needed as a Kelley prereq? thanks.
I’m pretty sure the calculus placement exam is required. I know for sure it was 3 years ago. But it really doesn’t matter how you do. Everyone trying to get into Kelley should take M119. Maybe if you are a direct admit and want to minor in math, you could take a higher calculus if you test into it.
@IUACCOOUNTING…
In your opinion is this a manageable sophomore schedule or should I change it around a bit? If need be I can take Fin Acct this summer (5 week class at local community college) and transfer the credit to lighten the load in the fall if necessary. Advisor suggested taking acct at IU as the manner in which they teach it will be helpful to other classes later on. Thanks for any feedback you can offer. BUS-G 202…need to take again at some point as I got a C- this past spring. Many of the classes shown under Spring below are full and heavily waitlisted for Fall which is primarily why I laid it out as shown; just want it to be manageable.
FALL (14 credits)
Bus Comm
Legal Environ
Fin Acct
Stats
Govt (again for 2nd time)
Spring (13.5 credits)
Compass II
K303 tech
Man Acct
Global Bus Env / Global Anal
A&H or Elective
That looks fine to me. Your fall semester is going to be harder than your spring, but I think you should be fine. Just make sure to set aside plenty of time to study for exams. Other than business communication, most of your classes don’t require much work day to day, they just require a lot of studying for exams.
@IUACCOUNING. Months ago advisor suggested taking Financial Accounting (A201) at IU as the manner in which they teach it will be helpful to other classes later on. Do you feel this suggestion has merit? I was considering taking it back home at a local community college beginning next week and simply transferring those credits. IU transfer site, show my local college as approved for this course. Side note: I applied and was accepted into IU fall of my freshman year (2017) as an accounting major. Not sure if that matters.
Are you still an accounting major? If you are, it would probably be good to take A201 at IU. If not, it doesn’t matter at all.
Still accounting major now beginning sophomore year, but was under the impression that first two years all Kelley students, regardless of major, take same i-core prereqs; meaning I could change my major (to professional sales or marketing as an example) after year two. No harm in taking A201 away from IU this summer and then A202 this fall at IU? Is there? Just trying to stay ahead somewhat. Or does Kelley have some requirement that says "if accounting major, all accounting classes must be taken at IU. Thanks again!
You can easily change your major, but if you want to stick with accounting, it’s probably better to take A201 at IU. It’s not like you have that heavy of a course load, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll learn next to nothing if you take it online based on my experience with other online classes. Accounting classes build on each other, so the next level of accounting will be impossible if you don’t understand A201 concepts.
