IIM - Indian Institute of Management

Would you go here instead of any other top business schools in the US besides Harvard, Wharton or Stanford? Supposedly they are hard to get into and their starting salary are about to match the top business schools in the US.

I don't know much about IIM, so I can't really comment. What I can comment on is that one of the big reasons why people go to business school is for the networking. If you plan to do most of your business in India after graduation, I think it may make more sense to consider IIM; otherwise, if you plan on doing business outside of India, then I don't think the network you develop there will be as useful. Just my $0.02.

mba is totally right. Well I'm assuming the intellectual pool at IIMs will be diluted now given recent developments. I wouldn't say their starting salary is about the same at top B-schools in US (Rupee vs Dollar). However if indexed to the cost of living, IIMs would definitely give Harvard, Wharton, Stanford a run for their money.

P.S. IIMs are actually a "Collection" of Universities. It's not just 1 University.

milki made a great point. Its a collection of universities and IIM-Ahemdabad is number 1 out of the 5. I believe second is IIM-Calcutta. Both are considered premiere business schools in the Asia Pacific region. IIM-Ahemdabad has ties with HBS, and IIM-Calcutta with MIT.

boomer01 hope this helps

I would choose Harvard, Wharton, Stanford over the IIM's any day because I see myself working in a major city such as NYC or Chicago not so much in Bombay.

"The overall acceptance rate ranges from around 0.15% to 0.4% of the applicants (compared with the acceptance rate of around 5-10% in the top US schools) depending on the rank of the individual IIM, with the rate progressively increasing roughly according to the following order IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode or IIM Indore."

I think you'll have better chances of acceptance if applying to Harvard, Wharton, or Stanford.

I thought the acceptance rate at top US B-Schools was more like 10-25%, depending on the school?

Ya mba is right again. I think it's 15% for Harvard and 20% for Sloan MIT. Glas, I do believe Ahmedabad is considered the best. The Indian School of Business is okay too (They have a partnership with Wharton, Kelloggs and London School of Business or something)
