IITs - the truth from an Indian's perspective

^Exactly. India was one of the wealthiest nations before the British took them over. I bet you support imperialism too? I better be careful that you or your neo nazi friends don’t kill me. God forbid! I’m not white…!

Borb, I am curious. was that a ■■■■■ post?

^Pretty much, I was bored and felt like stirring up a few posters.

BTW principalviola, I’m not white, I’m the furthest from it.

■■■■■. Nice.

ahahaha… I even quoted you because I thought you were for real!

principalviola: AWESOME post! That was bang on target.

BTW…come to Chennai! We’re awesome down here :D. The international school is quite snobbish here though, and you sound really down-to-earth. Lets hope you don’t get lost in the crowd there :).

About the rankings, the reason IIT does not figure high on those lists is because those lists combine multiple factors–infrastructure, research facilities, and other less important factors. If they considered only education which is most important factor,I’m sure it would be a different story altogether.

I was about to join the International school in Chennai…then decided against it:p

Where did you end up going? That is my main thing against it. Here in America I have always gone to public schools which are snobby. I want to GET AWAY from that, if anything. When I learned we may be moving I applied to a boarding school which is highly selective (to maintain academics) yet offers financial aid (to maintain the integrity, though I do not need it)… I was looking for such schools (boarding or not) around the area, in India.

My mom went to the “American International School Chennai” she told me she was blown away. I asked her if I could go to a local school (not government… just a rigorous school which does not have that rich factor) she told me that is a pipeline for Indian undergraduate education and I plan on coming to the US for that. Not as if IIT is a dream in heaven for me!

Smarchap: Yeah, my dad told me that the facilities/infrastructure is sub par compared with the other universities. Remember, however, you go to a university to study. If you want good facilities you may as well go to a Taj hotel and live there.

Both of you, I’ll send you a PM. I need some help with Indian schools (while this school is amazing and I’ll be happy going there I want a more dte school).

thanks

Sure, shoot me questions any time.

More and more students are going abroad from the local private schools - and to some of the top American colleges too (think Ivies and MIT and stuff). Combine that with the more chilled out experience (at least at my school), and it’s good :). Although if you do go to the American School, I’m sure you can find a handful of down-to-earth kids - you’re just gonna have to look pretty hard.

Wow! Lucknow is one of the completely snobbishness deficient places  I wish we had a bit more of it(Snobby girls always look better  )

About the flaws in deciding admission on the basis of 1 day, its obviously appalling. But then, you can’t create an admission committee large enough to handle half a million applications :P

No probs, principalviola, ready to answer anything about Chennai:D

I decided to study in a private school…the international school you’re talking about is in fact the only international school in Chennai!lol
I totally agree about the infrastructure thing…are you serious about IIT?Then, the American International School is not for you!

IIT is planning to raise the 12th boards’ qualifying percentage, and sometime later to add an interview round to the admission process. So you’d have to do well on both the written exam and the interview.

That would be much better I guess, but it’s going to take a looooooooong time before it’s implemented.

Yaar, this is India. Tell me when anything gets done :D

They’re also planning to include a short English section…but, all this will happen way afta I finish…so,no use…lol:p

@Tetrisfan - election times  hehehe

@smartchap - BITS and few other colleges already have english in their exams, I guess IIT should add it too. Too many bihari champoos getting in lol.

Effective communication of ideas is as important as conceiving them.

Hmmm, but still low scores in Eng, with monstrous scores in science+maths should still be given a chance. My dad was in a small village till 10th. It was only after he got into IIT(Which wasn’t a IIT then- Roorkee University) that he bought English gramar books etc. and started properly learning the language. Those kinds of super hard working but not so well off students still exist, and it woudl be unfair to put them at disadvantage.
@interview- That would be tooooo awesome! Its the only thing I’ve been always successful at :P

Does it strike you at all funny that the ITT instituting the interview makes it more “holistic”, which is what some students in the US complain about? There are always threads saying that test scores are the only things that should be considered when accepting students to college.

Whoa~intellectual discussion on the run…keep it up
principalviola: excellent defending…evry point which you wrote hit the bull’s eye…I would like you to go to IIT
@gary–>“they go to BABU BANARSI DAS”…lollllzzzz excellent one yaar…i think we should plan to pursue our further education from that brilliant institute…but i think its going to be tough…what say?

^I wish! I would NEVER make it into IIT…
