I'll Laugh/Cry if I get in (Chance Thread)

Ok, so chance me, please.

Senior, Asian (Chinese)
Really, really ghetto public school where only 20% go to a 4 year located in Stockton, California.
But, it has the IB program; really stupid policy of the city to do this. I took all IB or PIB classes since Freshman year.

GPA: 4.74 Weighted
3.88 Unweighted
Rank: 4/650
Counselor Recs: Pretty good, but my couselor has 500 other people to worry about.
Teacher Rec: One extremely good from History Teacher and one O.k from English.

I only sent in the ACT: 31 Composite

Extracurriculars:

Piano: 10 years, a lot of recitals, but no major awards. Send in CD.

Rotary Interact: Founder and President. We're going to Mexico this year to build playgrounds, and hosting a monster activity with Goodwill to collect old electronics. A lot of promotions.

Rotary International: I worked a lot with our sponsering club, including using my work earnings to donate 6 microscopes and 100 flashlights for a trailer to Uganda.

Golf: Varsity team in 11 and 12

Took P.E classes at local college cause IB doesn't allow of P.E during school year.

University of the Pacific Summer Camp: Piano performance
NSLC: Business
Rotary Youth Leadership Award- leading to full scholarship to Camp Royale
Stockton Symphony Master Class Performer

Other minor clubs: IB club, MESA, Key Club, Red Cross.

Job Experience: I worked for Youngrowth Toys Inc. since my freshman year as a Sales Rep. and office work. So far, I've made about 8000 dollars worth of sales and $3500 worth of profit. I use all my earnings to buy surplus toys and donate them to local charities.

That's about it. My essays should be pretty good and heartfelt. My stats might not be god-like but I tried my hardest to make the most of what I got in this little town. So, please tell me if I have any chance at all.

wow, you've done some really amazing things, especially in the context of your school...your community service work with the founding of the rotary and the toys are significant especially--original and creative...i have to say though that you are missing SAT IIs which I think are required...though I'm not sure. all in all, you deserve to get in, and whether or not they decide to take you, you will still be an awesome person. you represent everything that i like about the ivy league, and none of the pretention and built-in economic/background bias that kind of turns me away. ...from here it looks like you have the determination to succeed and do something good for this world. i really mean that! i've thought about this quite a bit-- i got deferred and i'm increasingly certain that i'm gonna do what i want to do regardless of where i go to college. maybe that is what i have to say for self esteem...but for now it is how i truly feel. PM me, where else are you applying?

Wow, looeypie, that comment made my day. You too represent all that is good about this college process these days with people encourging each other, instead of the dog eat dog world it has become. Thanks!

well, loopey is clearly loopy. he doesn't even realize that yale waives SAT IIs if you took the ACT.

jm8879: you have a 5% chance in RD. in other words, you are a below average applicant. if your school is truly "ghetto", and that only 20% go to college, why aren't you the valedictorian? your ACT, which converts to a 2040 on the SAT, is simply atrocious (for yale). your piano "passion" won't be seen as passion unless you have some solid awards to back up (so if your CD is average or somewhat above average, it won't cut it because they only want something truly exceptional for supplementary materials, as noted on the yale website)

the only thing that i find original is the rotary thing. but then again, many many other people have something special going for them.

in conclusion, you'll be rejected

I think you're very interesting!! Who knows how Yale will view you??

I'd like to know where else you're applying -- other East Coast schools? I think a lot of great schools would love to have you; can't say for sure whether Yale is one of them.

According to the College Board, Yale's middle 50% of first-year students have ACT scores between 31 and 34. You are, therefore, in this range. Your ECs are very interesting and show a passion for service. I say that you have a chance.

um, middle 50% of 31 to 34 means that you are at the lowest 25% percentile score wise. that 25% is consisted of recruited athletes, legacy, blacks/hispanics/native americans, and development cases. the OP is none of those

psychotickevin seems to be a little psychotic...no?
nobody can say for sure (expect maybe kevin) that you won't get in
hey, i got in and didn't think that i had much more than that going for me
it's all up in the air at this point...the only thing you can do is continue to keep working and hope for the best with all of your applications
i'll say this much: you're in the range, and you have similar chances to MOST other applicants

lmfao, kevin is fabricating acceptance rates based on test scores

Well, I'm already accepted into my second choice (UChicago EA). Yale has always been a dream, and I doubt I'll get in. But, I applied anyway because like everyone says, no one ever knows. In terms of ACT scores, I do have the highest (tied with someone though) in my school; as for the valedictorian situation, 3 other people have higher GPA than I, but that's pretty much it. Since my school does have the IB, there has to be some exception to the average student. Anyway, thanks to all for replying.

what school in stockton do you attend?

IMHO, UChi is at least as good as Yale; it just doesn't have the 3000-year-old reputation that Yale has. UChi is a FABULOUS "second choice."

I go to Franklin High. You?

Good luck with admissions! You really don't ever know until you try, you are definitely capable and DO have a chance of getting an admittance - but again, these schools only have enough seats for the amount of qualified applicants who want to get in. Admissions looks at all of these factors in context, so your ACT scores are more than passable in the context of the other facets of your application. Test scores are a smaller part of the admissions game than people really should consider them to be. (Recommended Reading: The Overachievers by Alexandria Robbins - that book will put all of these into an amusing and somewhat depressing context.) Either way, you're definitely set on going to an amazing school! Chicago is a wonderful city.
