Illinois, UMich, UPenn, Rice..?

I've been accepted at five schools for Electrical Engineering:

Georgia Institute of Technology
University of Pennsylvania
Univeristy of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan
Rice University.

I'll have to pay out-of-state tution for all of them, and can't really decide which one will be the best. Any advice?

UIUC, ranked highest of all of them. lol.

Ranked highest in what? Overall in the US National Rankings (US News Report) UPenn is highest ranked.

No, ranked highest in overall engineering and electrical engineering. It is ranked 4th overall tied with Cal Tech and ranked 4th for electrial engineering. It used to be always ranked 2nd for EE before but has recently dropped to 4 for EE in US NEWS.

How's the housing and food at UIUC?

You have 5 great excellant schools to choose from. All well ranked by USNWR.

Ga Tech #37 Nation, #6 Engineering, #6 EE
Michigan #25 Nation, #6 Engineering, #5 EE
Illinos #42 Nation, #4 Engineering, #4 EE
Rice #17 Nation, #20 Engineering, #15 EE
U of P #4 Nation, #25 Engineering, not in top 20 EE

Mich and Illinois are similar Big schools with phenominal academics, sports, frats and everything else socially a Big 10 school brings to you. There are many cc post comparing the two. The others schools on your list have very different feels to them. You can't go wrong with any of them.

If, you would like to go to school in a city and would like to go to a top 5 school in the nation, then U of P is for you. There EE program may not be as high as the others, but that shouldn't hold you back from any future opporrtunities.

Ga Tech is also a city school with a very different climate (much warmer) and social life, 70/30 Male/Female.

Rice is more similar to U of P and has more of a liberal arts feel with an excellent engineering program, but is the smallest of the five.

A very tough decision. You will have a lot of factors to weigh.

IMO I would choose U of P, but that is me and you have to figure, as best as you can, what is for you.

Only 8 days to decide, Good Luck!!!

Pretty hard choice. Personally, I chose UIUC over Johns Hopkins. Here are some reasons behind my choice.

-Big 10 Basketball
-Big school envirnment
-Less academic demanding

They say the ranking doesn't really matter for the colleges ranked within top 30 . If you want more competitive environment and want to focus more on academic, I would go to UPenn. If not, I believe u can definitely find more activities and chance to have fun at UIUC.

min,
You only slightly inferred to one other big difference. UIUC is much less competitive than JHU (or Penn). My son went to JHU's pre-college program last summer and took two courses. He was told by a professor, "you are free to help your classmates, but in the long run it will hurt you" due to the scaling/grading. That was a big turn off and led to my son to not even apply to JHU.

min, are you an EE major?

Isn't EE one of the most demanding majors at UIUC? Are you saying it's not that intense or rigorous?
