I am currently a senior in highschool and thinking about majoring in illustration (animation and concept art). I was wondering if anyone could give me some information about some strong programs, preferably on the east coast. I currently thinking about SCAD, Carnegie Mellon University, Pratt, and MICA. I have good SAT/ACT scores and I have a 3.88 gpa. I was wondering if I could hear opinions from some current students/parents in this major, or students at these schools.

Yes, I would not have suggested it if I did not think it was a good program. One suggestion would be to search the names of the schools you are interested in on this site and see if you can pull up older discussions of the programs. Another, get on line and look at the websites. You can tell a lot about a school’s interest in a program when you look at the classes and the types programs that are there. Also, look at what the teachers do outside of the classroom. Good luck.

RIT has a very strong art program and they do offer illustration as a major. My son is also interested in illustration and will be applying there soon.

What type of program are you interested in? My daughter is a sophomore at MICA in Illustration and loves the school and the program. Her work is conceptual and the school is a good fit. We looked at RIT and while she was accepted she decided not to pursue it because according to the head of the Illustration department her art “is very conceptual and not the kind of work they usually stress in the program”. That made sense to us since they have one of the few Medical Illustration programs.
