I'm a communications major. Should I go to UW?

I am a student at a community college in Washington State, and I plan on transferring after the end of my current quarter. Being a communications major, I've been told that I should go to WSU of UW due to WSU's communications school quality (which is highly ranked nationally). I want to go into public relations, and since WSU's communications school's emphasis is in broadcasting journalism, I figured that going to UW would be a better choice. I've always wanted to go to the UW, and I've always understood it to be a great school all around.

Anyway, for those who know about the communications programs at both schools, do you think I should still go to UW, or should I go to WSU (to which I've already been accepted)?

Hey! I’m thinking of majoring in communications, too.

It sounds like you’re set on communications and your preference is UW. Since WSU doesn’t seem to offer an emphasis in the program you’re planning to pursue, it might be best to lean towards UW. UW is also a larger school, and because of that, there’s (usually) more programs, more people to talk to (and learn from) and an easier to access to more opportunities.

I’m not sure about WSU, but I’m sure they have a great program as well. It might help to email the departmental advisers from both schools and go through some last minute questions. In addition, it might be helpful to find out what recent alumni from both schools are doing now with their careers.

Hope this helps :)

I’ll just leave this here:

Haha. I’ve seen this before, and it is hilarious. On a serious note, I know that both WSU and UW have good communications programs. My issue is that I don’t know how good my degree would be coming from UW. WSU has the Edward R. Murrow College of Communications, and that school is nationally ranked. I just wanted to know if there are any advantages of going UW’s college of communications. Are there?

The communication classes I’ve had from actual professors were quite good. But too many of their classes are taught by grad students. That’s why I dropped the major.

Now getting taught by a grad student doesn’t mean it’s awful (1/2 were good and 1/2 were awful for em) . But I thought it strange that I paid way less for CC classes with instructors who have been teaching 10+ years only to take a UW com class taught by a grad student with limited experience (and focused on taking their own classes at the same time).

(I was a double major for com and sociology - all of sociology’s classes are taught by actual professors).

@travelgirl: Thank you for responding! Since I have posted this, I have decided that I am going to WSU. My major is strategic communications, and WSU has the best PR sequence in the Pacific NW.

sounds like you made the right decision!

is philosophy a really competitive major ay UW?

@UDUBHUSKIES, philosophy is a “minimum admission requirements” major. They accept all applicants who meet the prerequisites to the major.

Don’t go to college if you’re a communications major

Very helpful. Thanks.
