I'm a High School Freshman

I completely and sincerely want to attend Tisch School of the Arts for Film & Television Studies (for screenwriting and directing).

Now, I’m only a high school freshman living in a small town in New Hampshire, but film is my passion and it has been for my entire life. Well, I’d like to think my entire life.

So, I just want to know what my chances are of getting in at the moment:

So far I have:

All A’s and B’s in every class I’ve taken. Mostly A’s, but a few B’s.
My GPA on the unweighted scale this trimester was a 3.6 out of 4.0.
I recieved high honors this trimester (my first high school trimester).
I was a Boy Scout for almost four years.
I am on the Student Council.

I also took Introduction to Journalism & Media.

As a freshman, I can’t do much academically. So next year, I’m taking Newspaper, our school’s literary magazine, and most importantly: Video Production class. I also was accepted to work for our school’s TV station, WHTV. A group of students collaborate to make a weekly TV segment talking about our school’s local news. We switch jobs every week including writing the script, directing it, editing it, DP’ing it, and being an actual anchor.

I plan to take all video production and media-related electives all four years of high school.

I’m an avid writer, and have written three full-length scripts, and still writing more.

I like to make short films with my friends as well.

I know I have a lot of time ahead of me, but I REALLY want to go to NYU. More specifically, Tisch. I want to be a screenwriter when I grow up, and possibly a filmmaker.

Here’s one of my screenplays that I wrote. It was my first one, so it’s not amazing:

Can any of you just let me know if: A. I have a good chance of getting in if I keep up the work. B. Any tips on what to do to increase my chances.

Thank you!

Welcome, retnuhhunter! You will find a wealth of information here on CC regarding all of your questions. However, you have posted in the Musical Theatre forum, where there may be limited help for your particular needs. You might try posting in the Visual Arts and Film Majors forum.

[Visual Arts and Film Majors - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/)

Yes, you have posted in the musical theater division of Tisch. However, I will add to make sure and take some AP classes when you can to show that you have challenged yourself and can handle college level work. Also, I know you are in New Hampshire but check out summer classes that the film division offers at NYU. It never hurts to say you were a part of their summer programs. Good luck and keep up the good work! My daughter’s dream was to attend NYU and she made it a reality! Also, get involved in some community theater etc or go talk to directors there who might be able to steer you in the direction of some more summer hands on work for film directing for high school students!

It is terrific that you are starting to look forward as a freshman. NYU Tisch is a great program, but very selective and very expensive. I encourage you to keep yourself motivated towards a goal, while exploring other schools in addition to Tisch where you could study film. You may discover that Tisch is indeed where you want to go in four years, and the admissions and the finances may work! You my discover through the research that there are other schools you like just as much as or even more than Tisch. You will learn and grow from the process of exploration. So much can happen in four years!

You may also want to start talking with your parents now about the financial aspects of college. How much do they think they will pay towards your college education? If you were to apply to college this year what would your EFC be? NYU does not meet full need, so your family will likely be required to pay more than EFC.

Again – it is wonderful that you are starting to think about all of this now! So, take advantage of your head start to fully explore all of your options, and the financial reality. Good luck! :)

PS. I am from NH originally, still spend a lot of time there, and maintain professional contacts there. There is actually quite a bit of filming that has been happening in NH recently. You may ant to check out opportunities to get involved with things in NH. Feel free to PM me, if you would like me to put you in touch with the people I know. I am sure they would be happy to answer questions you may have.
