I'm an International student applying to US colleges

Hi , I’m an international student applying to US colleges . I’m planning to retook my SAT this december for the 2nd time and I’m expecting a 1400 plus , My last sat score was 1300 with no prep ; And my GPA is 16 for the baccalaureat and 17 in my 9 and 10 th grade 15 in my junior year and 18.8 in my senior year , in a scale of 20 FRENCH SYSTEM .My ecs are a bit strong since it envolves co founding a club , Editing a blog and creating one , self learned forex trading , student body president and won a soccer tournament .
What are my chances to get in to top tier university .
SORRY FOR THE ENGLISH . I JUST WAKE UP

It depends on your definition of “top tier”. The very top schools are generally looking for 1500+ on the SAT, 750+ on SAT II, near perfect grades, strong ECs, internships, research, awards, etc… So if you were asking about chances for Ivy League and caliber, I would say your chances are slim to none. The acceptance rates are already in the single digits for US students and international competition is even worse.

That said, there are certainly plenty of US schools that fit your stats where you could be very successful.

What’s your intended major? Preferred location? Size?

Do you have any applications out yet? The deadlines are rapidly approaching for this admission cycle?

I already applied to skidmore early decision ; I applied to reed early action , and got in to the university of Iowa with a 15k schoarship , My intended major is mathematics , Can’t being from an under represented country and continent helpfull

be helpfull * sorry for the english again

I do need some sort of financial aid , which restrein my choices to mostly reachs

What about the grading scale ;how to convert it to US gpa ; since it’s very hard to get 18 , it requires a lot of effort and only one per cent get an 18 out of 20 . But when devided by 5 it leaves me with a 3. wich is no value compared with my actual gpa

Congrats on the acceptance to Iowa. They have very solid academics.

FWIW, I think Skidmore was a smart choice for ED. They are one of the more generous institutions for international student aid. You should be hearing from them soon so good luck!

Don’t worry about converting the grading scale. The admissions folks are well versed with international grading scales. Your grades are solid.

My actual SAT may be a drawback since it’s in the average range of skidmore would it hurt

These schools all have holistic admission. Obviously a higher SAT would be better but it is what it is. The important thing is for your score to be in their range.

What are you SAT component scores (EBRW and math)? I assume English is not your native language, have you taken the TOEFL test and if so, what was your score?

Is the Univ of Iowa affordable, with the scholarship?

My math section is 760 my EBRW is 540
I did no prep and I run out of time in the EBRW
My toefl score is 108
No I can afford a maximum of 15 k ; I applied to there college of business scholarships ; they will get back to me as soon as Junuary

For Skidmore your EBRW is well below the 25% level (p 10, #9 on the 2017-18 CDS), but your TOEFL score is very good…did you submit TOEFL to Skidmore?

Skidmore provided on average $64K of fin aid for 83 international students, per page 23 of the CDS (H6). https://www.skidmore.edu/ir/facts/common/CDS_2017-2018Final.pdf

Skidmore’s COA for 2018-19 is $68,764 (with lowest cost housing). https://www.skidmore.edu/bursar/cost.php Assume a 3% increase in costs for next year.

On top of that you will have expenses for books, activity fees and $2,360 mandatory health insurance, so count on another $4K in expenses. Also you will have to add costs for international travel to and from home. That all could work (but tight), assuming your family qualifies for need based aid at the average level of $64K.

Where else have you applied? Have you run the NPC calculators on the websites of the schools you have applied to? Not always accurate in every instance, especially for international students, but could be helpful nonetheless. All schools will take into account each family’s income, and some assets, when calculating how much each family can pay. The inputs, calculations and final number can vary from school to school.

Good luck and you should find out soon at least with respect to Skidmore admission, not sure when the fin aid package will follow if you are accepted.

I guess that travel would cost a maximum of 2.5 K dollars ;Given the AVERAGE AID and COA ; I would have to pay a 5K plus 7K for the fees mentioned above wich is still affordable
Can you suggest any other colleges for me

Davidson and U. of Richmond are on the list of schools with good financial aid for international students. You may want to run the NPC for those schools and see if they could be a fit.

The NPC has no section for internationals

It won’t be perfect but it will give you a rough estimate.

The NPC gave an estimated net price of 7500 .

When does EA colleges send decisions

Decisions are school dependent, there is no universal date. Some schools will start releasing as soon as mid December, others not until January. Check your college portals.
