I'm applying to Harvard with a 3.0-3.2 GPA... any chance?

somebody somewhere on this thread mentioned that Harvard boasts that they reject 800 people with perfect 2400 score.

Please, get the fact right. There are about 200+- students who get perfect 2400 in the ENTIRE year (on year 2006, 238 of them). Where did Harvard get 800 of these people to reject, let alone admit?

Don't start an urban myth that glorifies Harvard anymore than the existing hype!

I revived this thread so that people might make a few comments from an objective point of view.

NOT so people could be so blinded by their point of view... that they don't even realize when this was created- and that the original posters and many of the following are LONG gone

From the OP's time stamp:

12-09-2008, 06:43 PM

The OP is a current junior. I wish him well in his college search, and suggested that he think seriously about a range of colleges to apply to.

To review, the number of students who score 2400 on the SAT is less than 300 in a typical application season.

<a href="http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat_percentile_ranks_2008_composite_cr_m_w.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat_percentile_ranks_2008_composite_cr_m_w.pdf</a></p>

Since Harvard superscores the SAT, there would be alot more "perfect" scores on applications attained through multiple sittings than the less than 300 achieved in a single setting.

WishWash-

I have already received a likely letter because I'm an athlete. I have been told that I'd have no chance if it weren't for my sport, and my stats and ec's are significantly stronger than yours.
I'm not tryin to be showy...I know I'm not as smart or deserving as most on CC. Just trying to say its very unlikely!

Go ahead and try if you wish. The odd's aren't good but as they say in athletics...
..."You miss 100% of the shots you never take."

There was one guy who got in last year with a 2.82. Not an athlete/URM/legacy, high SAT scores, ECs, and good essays

While you may not have much of a chance. There's no reason to leave the question unanswered, so go ahead and apply; but dont let it be your lifeline. People leaking brains have been rejected from that school. If you are motivated to learn and find a successful life, you should not that be overshadowed by being rejected from a top class University or any other College for that matter. Good Luck.

I have previously requested that College Board publish statistics showing "superscored" SAT scores by all individuals in a given graduating class, as it now does for highest one-sitting score for each graduating class. You could make the same request to emphasize to College Board that members of the public are interested in this information.

My own best guess, based on what College Board does publish,

<a href="http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/Avg_Scores_of_Repeat_Test_Takers.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/Avg_Scores_of_Repeat_Test_Takers.pdf</a>

is that no more than 150 percent of the number of persons who obtain single-sitting 2400s obtain "superscored" 2400s. In other words, students with scores of 2400 are sufficiently rare that Harvard couldn't possibly fill its whole entering class of about 1600 students with them, and indeed more than 1000 Harvard students each year are admitted with lower-than-2400 scores on the SAT.

I’m new to the site but I’m African by citizenaship but im also a citizen here and my dad is technically a disabled veteran
if I have a 3.2 GPA as of my Junior year and since im taking AP Calculus, AP Chem and AP Studio Art my senior year and I have been in rigorous classes since my Freshman year, and extracurriculars involving school, sports and church since my youth will that help me have a chance and im shooting for a 2100 on my SAt, what are your suggestions?

^ gah, you should have let this thread die in peace, and now this flaming ball of mean comments has been reincarnated

Um, with the GPA… It’s rather difficult… Almost impossible? I think H is a stretch, but if you have $65 to spare… Go ahead. Don’t expect much though.

This is ridiculous, just to see all these people commenting and lowering your self esteem and Morale. Firstly, How many of these people commenting are actually a Harvard admission officer? Or a student there? @wishwish who said you don’t have a chance? You definitely do. A valedictorian with a 4.0 gpa and 2400 SAT does NOT get accepted into Harvard. There is clearly something OTHER than the grades that the admission officers are looking at. It might be your essays, or your EC’s. Don’t de-moralize yourself just by listening to random people who probably have never even visited Harvard. I’m applying to Harvard SCEA next year and I don’t have a perfect GPA either. Do NOT be afraid to apply, there is always a 1% chance.

This is an ancient thread. The OP last posted in 2010.

And, the OP was intending to matriculate at Iowa State.

This thread is 6 years old. The OP has probably graduated college by now. Closing.
