I'm at Uconn and I've been accepted University of Southern Florida

I'm currently going to school for a Business degree in finance or possibly an economics degree which is a BA.

I know quite a few people (through my parents) who graduated with a Business degree from USF. Their current real estate agent even transferred from Uconn to USF. I plan on asking them why they decided to transfer. However in the mean time I would like to get an idea about which school is better and would like to hear all of your opinions on which school I should go to.

Thank you all

Why do you want to transfer? Do you not like the social aspect of the school, the academics, a combination of the two or something else entirely? From my perspective USF is a much weaker school than UConn and not worth OOS prices.

Well most of my family is moving down to Florida; My parents, grandparents and my aunt and uncle. I like the whole beach aspect, and nicer weather etc. I think I would be able to get instate prices though because my parents are currently having a house built in Florida.

I’m just wondering how the school is, how much “weaker” USF is than Uconn. I’m also confused how USF has a lower acceptance rank and generally requires a 3.7-4.0 to get accepted while uconn is on the lower end 3.0(instate)/ 3.3-3.5. How is USF a weaker school with a higher GPA “requirement.” Can it be that once people get there the beach distracts them and their school work becomes sub-par? Is it possible if I maintained good grades at USF that that would in fact be better than Uconn?

Also why do you believe USF is a much weaker school?

The average GPA for a school is almost useless, they could be using weighted, unweighted, the schools their students applied from could have had more grade inflation. Or any combo of those factors.

You’re not necessarily comparing apples to apples when comparing admit rates and average GPAs at these two schools.

Consider Connecticut v. Florida public school performance in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which measures elementary/secondary students based on their exam proficiency in reading and math. Connecticut’s scores are much higher than Florida’s. So a 3.8 GPA in Florida public schools may be equivalent to a lower GPA in Connecticut.

Look at the class standing breakdowns. At USF, 32% of students ranked in their HS top 10%. At UConn, 43% of students ranked in their HS top 10%. So UConn gets a higher percentage of high-ranking students, despite their lower GPAs.

Look at the average test scores. USF averages are 575CR, 587M. UConn averages are 594CR, 623M.

USF has a 25% 4-yr graduation rate. UConn has a 68% 4-yr graduation rate. 86% of USF professors have a PhD/other terminal degree. 94% of UConn professors have a PhD/other terminal degree.

These are some of the factors that give UConn a much higher standing than USF in the US News pecking order (#63 v. #170).

It seems like you prefer USF but trust us, UConn is a MUCH better college. The student to teacher ration at USF is crazy high 27:1. Graduation rate is also extremely low.

This might not be a fair comparison because USF is very young(1956) compared to UConn which was established in 1881.
