A long time ago, in a distant year known as "2010", I was accepted into FAU and UNF, the first of which I already eliminated as an option for me to attend. Since last fall, I have been battling denials from USF and UCF, and this morning, my appeal to USF succeeded and I was accepted (still waiting to hear back from UCF).

So, until I hear from UCF, my options are UNF and USF. Prior to this morning I was pretty set on UNF, but that was because I didn't expect USF (or UCF) to change their minds. Now, I am not that sure.

Each has a nice list of pros and cons, but I am very unsure on which one I should go to. Any advice?

I’m pretty sure it’s a better school (at least academically, its on the national rankings, UNF’s in regional) but I’m not sure its best for me. I have a learning disability, and don’t fit in large environment, which would make UNF better for me. Still, USF and Tampa have more opportunities in the field I want to go into (film and media production), and I don’t have much time to decide. If I get into UCF though, that solves this dilemma lol.

USF is better than USF rank wise, but if you don’t think you’ll do well at a big school then I guess UNF would work. LOL, but again UCF is the biggest school in the state so if you think you’ll do fine there then you’ll do fine at USF.

^UCF is the second biggest school in Florida too. Miami Dade College has maybe 180,000 students.

I’ve been to UNF a number of times and it has much more of a regional feel to it than USF. UNF is Jacksonville through and through, USF is more connected with the whole state of Florida and beyond.

Actually I think UNF should merge with UF, it was almost done decades ago. UF’s campus is pretty much built out and can’t grow anymore, the roads around it can’t support more traffic; merging UNF into UF now would be a perfect fit for both schools. UF would like to get bigger, would like revenue it could get with UNF and growing the Jax enrollment #'s 20,000 or so, UF already has strong ties with Jax community with Shands-Jax and big alumni base. Merging UNF with UF would be a win/win combination for both schools now.

Lizard, right now, which school do you think I should attend? I’m working on a pros/cons list, this is what I currently have.

Pros:

University of North Florida:
Smaller
Great campus
Able to deal directly with teachers

University of South Florida:
I can see myself finishing here
More of a college experience
Telecommunications Production major
More reputable school
Shorter drive

Cons:

University of North Florida:
Less opportunities
I cant see myself finishing here
Little sports environment

University of South Florida:
Small fish in a big pond
Large campus and populated
Teacher aids

HK, I’m not going to try to tell you what to do, you’ll have to sort things out on your own. UNF could be the best thing for you, maybe not. I’ll tell you though my UNF experience. I was all set to enroll at UNF my senior year of high school, but changed my mind after visiting UNF on a springtime weekend. I was going to do a sport at UNF and went up to see the coach on a Sat. The campus seemed so deserted to me and the only place open for food was a few vending machines. I got cold feet and never returned to UNF. I ended up at USF and doing an entirely different sport! I’m pleased with the way things have worked out for me at USF and will graduate next year.

Campus wise, which do you think is better? I have been to both, and I remember the UNF campus being much more modern and beautiful. When I went to the USF open house, I didn’t get to see all of the campus, but what I saw was much more city-like than UNF.

Also, if I may ask, what were your HS stats?

Good enough to get in. My weighted GPA was over 4.00 something and I almost had AA degree from dual enrollment in high school. I’m getting 2 different bachelor’s degrees next year at same time.

UNF campus is more compact, the student union was just opened and big new dorm with swimming pool was just being finished when I was looking at school. USF has more stuff and is a small city in itself. More activity on USF campus.

USF definitely is a bigger school and can possibly provide more opportunities since it’s in Tampa. I’ve been on their campus before and I’ve definitely seen a lot of school spirit there. There are over 40,000 students who attend the school so if you feel you’ll do better at a smaller school I’d probably go with UNF although I don’t know much about that school itself other than it’s location. I’m assuming if you get involved in the activities at UNF that pertain to film you’ll be able to find the same opportunities you’d find at USF.
In your college decision process why had you first dismissed FAU? (I’m possible FAU student)

Sunny, the only reason I dismissed FAU is because it is just too close to home (I live in Broward County). It might be an hour and a half from home, but that is just too close. I want to get away.

Anyways, thanks for your input Sunny. I think I am going to choose USF over UNF, but I find out if I got into UCF tomorrow.

Mayday, my mom was getting worried that I wouldn’t hear back from UCF until after the May 1 deadline, so she called someone from the school last Thursday to find out when I would know by. Whoever she talked to said that my appeal was scheduled to be reviewed tomorrow afternoon, and that their decision won’t be posted on the myUCF page, I have to call a certain number tomorrow afternoon, ask for the appeals committee, tell them my name, and they will tell me the decision.
