To $10k? I am not sure. They may give some scholarship but then will bring it to EFC. Many privates do it that way…
Or philosophy or creative writing. Three majors were listed.
They have CS.
I wouldn’t. Someone just mentioned others.
I’d keep the current list, add Tulsa and done.
Like all said OP will be NMF. I just like insurance.
But those are two that would be free if won so I threw them out there.
Maybe replace Brown with Cornell, like some comments mentioned?
I think you should consider USC, Vandy, Rice, Wash U or Emory as low reaches. All are generous with aid and I know USC, Vandy and Emory are good with merit aid. Check the deadlines though, I think all three have early application deadlines to be considered for merit.
Yes, plus a few give extra like $2000 for study abroad.
Also U of Miami and Embry Riddle give the value from Banacquisto (~$23000) which both would stack with their other scholarships.
Have considered Emory since it’s pretty close by and I love Atlanta (at least as much as I can love anything not in the Northeast). Rice not so much because of location. Vandy and Wash U I will look into. Thanks!!
However, students should never assume that merit will “stack” with need-based aid. More often than not, this is not the case, and the college will expect them to pay the full expected family contribution. Same problem with the OP’s mention of private scholarships vis-a-vis Brown. Not only is a large private scholarship highly unlikely, but it would have to be reported to the school, and need-based aid would be adjusted accordingly.
So, definitely replace Brown with another generous school. Cornell is great if the NPC is favorable. UPenn and Northwestern haven’t been mentioned yet - could be worth running those NPC’s too. Don’t be too quick to rule out Rice - their aid is very generous, and the student experience is fantastic… and if Atlanta and St. Louis are in contention as locations, Houston has a lot of the same “pros” as well as the same “cons.” It’s an easy travel hub, at least!
Since California is on the table, maybe run the NPC’s for Harvey Mudd and Caltech?
Lafayette recently announced they are going no loan for incomes under 200K.
Agree, but some of the schools I mention offer a very limited number of merit full tuition. Since op is Hispanic and first Gen in addition to being an excellent student/applicant, he should take advantage of potentially fulfilling instructional priorities for these schools.
MIT, UF, Georgia Tech, and FIU applications are in for EA/(early) RD rounds! Working now on UCF and scholarships.
Here’s to hoping.
You’ve got a great record; a lot to be proud of. If you’re interested in Tulsa, ping me here. I’d be happy to tell you what programs we have in your interest areas (good philosophy, creative writing, and STEM). You’re going to go to a great school with your marks. Let me know if Tulsa is of interest as we’d love to have you.
I got some mail from Tulsa that mentioned NMSC but for EA. Is the package still available if I apply RD?
Also, thank you!!! Being able to let go of these apps and focus on other stuff has been a lifesaver.
Yes, it is available for RD.
Accepted to FIU! Had my MIT interview last Friday. The bulk of the decisions come out in December/January, though.
Also submitted to UCF and waiting on them to send me my credentials.
Is $10,000 what your parents are willing to pay per year?
If so, you could maybe add another $10k in federal loans, work-study, and a summer job. Maybe, idunno, $12,000.
So call it $22k per annum.
Carry on.
Yes! Thank you
Small Update: Got 2nd Place in my school’s MAA AMC 12 competition, out of ~70 people. We haven’t received the scores, but I dont think mine is high enough for AIME or anything particularly impressive. Should I send an update to a school like MIT?
Congratulations on the 2nd place! Until you receive your scores or move on to competitions beyond your school, I would probably hold tight for now. This is not my area of expertise, however, so perhaps @hebegebe might have a different opinion.
No, that is not worthy of an update.
Noted. Thanks!
