I'm Back - Johns Hopkins or Colleges X,Y,Z

Hey all my CC peeps. Sorry I have not been around for a bit. Been busy with on-campus programs and wrapping up a lot of projects that had been on the back burner during the last few months. I also got a chance to take 3 days off. Woo Hoo.

So I know I have missed a lot of questions, so feel free to post them again here and I will get you answers as soon as possible. (As always, if you post on the JHU message boards I will respond much sooner - priorities!!!)

I suggest you all read the new Hopkins Insider post (<a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/04/may_1st_is_almo.html)%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/04/may_1st_is_almo.html)</a>, especially those of you who still have yet to make your final college decision.

I noticed while I was away MANY threads asking for comparisons of Hopkins to Colleges X, Y, Z, 1, 2, 3, etc. Those who have read my posts over the last half year, know that I think such posts are a bit ridiculous -- especially when factoring in most of the people responding have their own personal agendas, like to extend untrue myths, and just don't know anything (you know who you are.)

I will say though that if you filter through all that "stuff" some time these threads can be helpful. Read my Insider post and I hope my advice will help.

Good luck with your final decisions, and don't stop asking me questions.

how do i know what level of language i should take? is there some kind of proficiency test?

You'll get more information on placement tests when you get your registration information, but yes, there are placement tests for math and languages

Hey admitted JHU students -- still trying to decide if Hopkins is right for you. Well we have one last admitted student chat tonight (Wednesday, April 26).

See your admit packs or the Admitted Student Web Site for the link.

(((Please do not post the link here - this is just for admitted students)))

AdmissionsDaniel, thank you so much for the ways of figuring out how to pick a college. I have decided to accept an offer from Chicago but hopefully JHU will once again open their doors at SAIS for graduate study. JHU is an awesome school and good luck to all those who will be attending.

michael, thank you for your message and I am glad to have been able to help. Best of luck at Chicago, they are lucky to have you.

Admissions Daniel, can you state how many students were accepted ED? How many were accepted RD? What were the mean SAT/ACT scores this year? Did you take into consideration "demonstrated interest" on the part of the prospective applicants? (I noticed that this is now included on the common data set.) Thanks very much for your time.

check old Hopkins Insider (<a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/</a>) for all those numbers -- that is what it is there for. Check the posts in December for ED information and the posts in April for RD. Whatever is on the blog is the information we release to the public.

As far as "demonstrated interest" it matters but in no way as it does at some other schools. We like to admit students who are interested, but first and foremost we admit students who are the right fit for Hopkins.

Because JHU is my number one choice, can i send my resume and academic information to JHU and ask them whether or not I am a “match” for JHU based on my numbers? Who would I send the information to? Its a rather long document.
Thanks so much for your time

There is NO chance that the admissions office will do that. The best person to ask is your high school guidance counselor or academic adviser.

i thought that would be a silly question to ask- but I read on one of the threads that a person sent in their resume to penn and they replied something along the lines of raise test scores- it wasn’t with an application, they just sent it in

But I will definitely circulate my resume somewhere else

Here is one of my cardinal rules:
Chances for Admission: Questions regarding an individual’s chances for admission, while important, cannot be answered here. Admission to Johns Hopkins is a complex process, and there are no set “formulas.” The Admissions Committee employs a holistic approach to application review, meaning that there is no way to determine an applicant’s chances for admission outside of a full review of the application. Please keep that in mind.
