Welcome New College Rep, AdmissionsDaniel from JHU

Hi, everyone, please join me in welcoming our latest College Rep here at College Confidential. AdmissionsDaniel is from Johns Hopkins University, and will help forum members get to know JHU better.

We appreciate AdmissionsDaniel joining the CC community, particularly during this very busy time of year. Welcome!

Roger

Hello everyone and thank you to Roger for the introduction. My name is Daniel Creasy (from now on known as AdmissionsDaniel) and I am one of the Admissions Counselors at Johns Hopkins University. Some of you may have been reading my Hopkins Insider blog over the last few weeks (<a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/</a>) or have read my response on the new Johns Hopkins Message Boards (<a href="http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/%5B/url%5D">http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/</a>.) We've been really excited with how the new Hopkins Interactive (<a href="http://apply.jhu.edu/hi/%5B/url%5D">http://apply.jhu.edu/hi/</a>) and encourage you all to continue to use the services and check back frequently for regular updates.

I come to College Confidential to help you all out as it relates to learning about Johns Hopkins University. Whether it be about academics, student life, the application process -- I am here to answer questions and provide accurate information. I will avoid spin at all times, and help as much as possible to dispell all the myths about JHU. Please note that I will avoid all questions about your chances for admission.

Many of you know "laxfan04" and she will continue to post as well. But now she will focus more on student life, and I will focus on the admissions stuff. I thank "laxfan04" for all her hard work the past few months, and for letting me know that me posting on the boards would be beneficial.

Cheers.

Hey Daniel, it's nice to meet you. It's nice to have a rep to turn towards for admission inquiries, as some of the other sections without reps constantly talk in circles about the admissions "game" without really getting anywhere.

Hello AdmissionsDaniel,

My name is Nik, and I am currently a junior in high school. Johns Hopkins has been at the top of my list of colleges for years, and I intend to apply early decision when the time comes. I know that you may hear this question quite often, but what exactly do you, as an admissions officer, look for in a prospective applicant? I would also like to know if you personally believe that SAT scores play a large role for gaining admission into Johns Hopkins. Lastly, is it true that at Johns Hopkins there is cutthroat competition among the students who intend to apply to medical school? Thank you.

Best Regards.

Hey Daniel, nice to meet you too. What do you look specifically for at first glance in an application?

Yeah! Wahoo! Welcome to the crazy CC world Daniel (I do I have to call you boss???)

To all those I have helped on CC the past few months -- Daniel is my main source of information and has been my go-to-go as I answer your questions. I vouch for him in every way, and he should be of a great help to you all.

He probably won't post as frequent as I do - he does have to read those apps - but with both of us on CC now you are all the better for it.

(((And oh yeah, you better be nice to him...)))

Hello Daniel, welcome to CC.

Johns Hopkins is also one of the top universities on my list, but I have a few questions:
1. How safe is the campus? (I've heard some stories)
2. Can you explain the grading system a bit? (I've heard a system composed of honors, high honors etc.)
3. I'm sure you've been asked this before, but would you say JHU is competitive or cutthroat?
4. Outside of the classroom, what's your favorite part about JHU?
5. How are the meals and dormitories?

Thanks again for all your help.

some of the questions asked here are answered on the jhu message board...

Well, maybe rman would like some reassurances by a real rep from jhu :) (evidently he has only posted once, though)

admissionsdaniel posts plenty on the jhu messege board that monii was referring to

Really, what's the user name?

...i believe it is....admissionsdaniel

hi, daniel...

Thanks AdmissionsDaniel! We all really appreciate the help!

(sidenote - maybe I haven't been around the hopkins forum long enough...but I've always assumed laxfan04 was male. It may have been the username. I wasn't aware I was so sexist..lol)

welcome AdmissionsDaniel. While I don't have any questions, I think it's great how JHU is reaching out to applicants through means of internet.

Thank you all for the kind greetings. Glad to hear that you are excited to welcome me into the CC community. So on to some answers...

Nik (th3strok3s) you ask some interesting questions and I am glad you are starting the college search as a junior. As far as your questions, and also dxu33's question, I ask for your patience until I publish the next entry of the Hopkins Insider blog (<a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/)%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/)</a>. Later this week I will post my next entry and it will focus primarily on how we read applications at Hopkins and what we look for. Check back and I think the information I provide will really shed some light on what we really do with your application.

You also ask about cutthroat competition, and I must say I get this question every day and at times it can get a bit frustration. For some reason (guidebooks to be exact), Hopkins has been labeled a cutthroat and overly competitive school - IT IS NOT, especially at the Undergraduate level. Such practices are actually frowned upon at Hopkins and avoided at all levels. But don't take my word for it -- check out this discussion thread on our Hopkins Message Boards: <a href="http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/default.asp?action=9&read=25644&fid=786%5B/url%5D">http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/default.asp?action=9&read=25644&fid=786</a>.</p>

Be back to answer the rest of questions...

Cheers!

OK more questions...

Rman308, here we go...
1. Safety -- see this thread: <a href="http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/default.asp?action=9&read=25907&fid=786%5B/url%5D">http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/default.asp?action=9&read=25907&fid=786</a> (and a recent post I made on CC)

I am not sure what you meant but honors, high honors -- but the grading system at Hopkins is pretty standard A+/A/A-/B+.... system. The one quirk, and it is a good one, is that all first semester freshmen have "covered grades." This means your first semester of classes at Hopkins you will get pass/fail grades (or actually satisfactory/ non-satisfactory). This is not optional. Learn more here:

Simple answer, NO. See above for a longer answer

Remember I am not a student but a staff member, but I think my favorite non-academic thing about Hopkins is evident during a home Lacrosse game when Homewood field is packed with fans and we are winning (which typically is the case).

Don't ask me -- check out the Hopkins message boards as there are numerous discussions about food and the dorms. I will say though that the food system is going through a complete make-over and we are all quite excited to see what will transpire come next fall.

Cheers!

Hi AdmissionDaniels:

I am applying to Johns Hopkins this year. According to the blog, the deadline for submitting the application was "before the ball drops at midnight", if I remembered correctly, and the Johns Hopkins website lists the deadline as Jan 1.

I submitted the supplement at 12:14 midnight (between 12/31 and 1/1) and the common application site still lists the status as not yet downloaded. Could this be a problem?

Thanks.

Purrli,
You have nothing to worry about. We will be processing applications submitted through the end of the day on Jan. 1.

The status showing as submitted and not downloaded should also not be of concern. As you can imagine we had thousands of application submitted between 12/30 - 1/1 and it takes some time for our system to download all these applications. Our Operations Department is working dilligently to download everything and it will take some time -- this is not an automated system.

Cheers!

Thank you! Phew...
