I'm choosing UCSD over Cal.

"I'm choosing UCSD over Cal. Am I correct?!"

I didn't SIR yet.
But I am in 90% to go to UCSD and only 10% to UCB.
UCSD gave me Chancellor scholarship (more money, priority registration, mentoring, internships)
UCB is too close to my home, dorms are so expensive, no priorities

I declined: CalPoly SLO, UCLA, UCI, UCD

If you like SD, congrats.

But search the SD website. To me, it’s not worth the money. I don’t like their college system. I don’t like the fact that they have no school spirit. I don’t like that they don’t have D1 sports. I don’t like that the campus is surrounded by multi-million dollar homes, and thus presents no campus community. I don’t like that many students go home on weekends because they are bored on campus. If none of those things are important to you, and they probably are not since you turned down UCLA…

Personally, I’d take Davis or Santa Barbara over SD any day, and Cal over those two. The only big plus for SD is BME.

Congrats on your decision to go to UCSD. It’s a great institution as is UC Berkeley. I had to privilege of attending UCSD for one quarter and I thought it was an amazing school. I loved it. However, keep in mind that it is expensive to live on or off campus. I actually spent more on housing at UCSD than I did in Berkeley.

I wouldn’t really listen to bluebayou. His post, and mine are purely opinion. I really liked UCSD’s 6-college system and if anyone ever tells you that UCSD doesn’t have school spirit they are lying. UCSD has a lot of school spirit and great sports teams. UCSD students recently voted against going D1 because they felt that school funds should go to academics and not a football or baseball team. They are very serious about their academics and that is something to be respected. La jolla is beautiful and so is the campus. Some students go home on the weekends but a lot of people don’t. There are so many parties on campus on the weekends - I was quite surprised. Anyway, you can’t compare Berkeley’s school spirit with UCSD’s. Berkeley has enough school pride and spirit for three univerisities.

Go with what you think is best. I chose Berkeley because it was the best choice for me in terms of a whole plethora of reasons. It seems like you have your mind made up. If you have any questions you can PM me.

Exactly. And I so stated. (And that is what the OP sought.) Indeed, when it comes right down to it, choosing a college is nothing but opinion. At least I posted some of the reasons that I don’t prefer SD, and did not hide behind them (in PM).

Since both posts are based on “opinion,” then logic would dictate that the OP shouldn’t listen to you either. :D

bluebayou - Yes, he should make his own decision but he should disregard your unfair bias toward a school in which you probably do not have any first hand experience attending. Yes, ultimately opinion that he or she must base their decision but at least he or she will hear both sides.

I did post some reasons why I like UCSD… try reading my second paragraph. Also, some people prefer to have a one-on-one conversation with someone… I am merely providing that option to someone. Assuming that I am hiding behind a PM is laughable, especially since we are all hiding behind a screen name, hence the name college confidential (talk about faulty logic).

Here are some more reasons I liked UCSD:

 1. World class faculty
 2. World class University
 3. The location is great - only 5-20 minutes from museums, beaches, Pacific Beach (party town).
 4. On-campus gyms are amazing and huge
 5. Beautiful campus (lots of trees, grass, art)
 6. Main library is unique
 7. The entire school is very contemporary (amazing architecture and art)
 8. Active student organizations
 9. San Diego is full of things to do - the city is only a short drive away.
 10. The list can go on.

Your reasons for choosing SD sound reasonable.

The weaknesses of SD that some people listed here are mostly accurate.

I went to SD for undergrad and Berkeley for grad school, so I’ve experienced both universities.

The other consideration is that Cal’s Engineering program is consistently number three in the country (or number 2, depending on who is counting). IMO, money would have to be a large consideration to turn that down.

I guess I agree with bluebayou. I guess those things don’t really matter to seniorsfo, since he or she turned down UCLA as well. Or maybe seniorsfo doesn’t really see them as weaknesses. Either way, congrats. :)

Given the scholarships (regents/chancellor ?) OP is making a good choice for him/her. There are plenty from the bay area who chose UCSD so there should be enough like-minded students there who don’t leave the campus on weekends.

Congrats on choosing SD! Personally there are great things about all the major UC campuses… for me SD means having academics easier and being closer to home.

Go to Mission Bay often.

The most reason for choosing UCSD is internships.
I will get mentor and guaranty internship.

UCSD - single room costs 12K
UCB - single room costs 17K

UCB - Mechanical Engineering is # 3
UCSD - Aerospace Engineering is # 17
UCLA - Aerospace Engineering is # 20 - very small department

Do you guys know 2012 Top 10-20 Engineering Schools - Undergraduate? and Graduate?

Besides USNews, I don’t know of any undergrad eng rankings. You can search grad programs by Eng major.

[Find the Graduate School That’s Right for You — PhDs.org Graduate School Guide](http://graduate-school.phds.org/)

or, you can sort by college. UCSD, for example, is ranked ~15 for Mech and Aerospace, 4 for BioEng, 23 for Structural, 22 for Comp Sci, 30 for EECS (a particular Cal strength), 25 for Materials Science,

btw: big congrats on scoring a Regents. Since you posted on the Cal site, I’m just giving you other things to consider. If you wanted concurrence in your 90% decision, you shoulda posted on SD’s site. :D

BOOM i declined UCSD (no regents) and UCLA (w/ regents) for cal w/ regents :P

I SIR to UCSD
I hope I made a good decision

Priority registration and internships are more worthy than prestige.

Sometimes it is not all about the prestige. People that try to shove the idea of prestige down your throat are very narrow minded. Think of it like this, many people who are not ready for Berkeley or Stanford end up going there only to suffer in their designated majors. The school isn’t so prestigious anymore is it? Because in the end the employers are going to look at the GRADES you received when you went to the institution, not at the prestige of the university. If you PAYING OUT OF YOUR POCKET to go to Berkeley and receiving bad grades at the same time than what is the POINT of going to such a prestigious school? I feel like people are over consumed with this prestige idea.

I am glad you made the decision which was best for you. People that are paying out of their pockets would realize this… others that are sitting on their bums getting their parents money would obv. choose Berkeley. I feel like it is time for people to grow up and realize that every UC is equally “prestigious”. Every UC has its ups and downs. For people to choose UCs MERELY ON ITS STATUS is VERY NARROW minded. Grow up.

That’s a good idea. Triton pride!

I really don’t understand the point of this thread. It’s not like people care that you are choosing another school over Cal. A lot of people do it and it’s really no big deal…

.

LOL… All UC’s have these things especially Berkeley…

It is not narrow-minded to consider prestige, since the whole point of college is to get the degree so that you can get hired based on prestige. From what I’ve heard they don’t really care about GPA after the first job, and of course when people admiringly hear where you graduated from, they’re not going to first ask what your GPA is. Maybe you should go tell all the employers and admirers that caring about what college people go to is stupid and narrow-minded. I’d completely agree with that sentiment, but such bias exists and is therefore a legitimate reason for attending a prestigious school.
