I'm confused about the signed tax returns.

Yea they said that on line 11 I put my parents’ status as separated but before that I put married so it triggered an NCP. Looks like I have to contact each institution about this. What do I do when I have to send it to more colleges? Only Penn requires NCP, but I also sent it to UChicago and Drexel who do not require NCP, should I explain it to them too?

Penn just replied back saying this:“You can elect not to complete the NCP PROFILE and just submit both parents’ information on all of the forms, since they are still married.”

I think I’ll be fine for Penn at least.

Did you include BOTH parent’ incomes and assets on the regular Profile? If not…you will not be fine for Penn.

Unless I’m misunderstanding…you put only your custodial parent on the Profile…and indicated the parents were separated, right?

If the status was incorrect on the profile and NCP info was entered on it, I would still contact the the schools that don’t require the NCP supplement explaining everything and letting them know that financial info for both was in fact entered on the profile. I believe you said that was the case.

In February the schools are going to want copies of 2014 tax documents after your mom has filed 2014 taxes. Some use IDOC and some want it sent in a different way. So pay attention to the finaid web pages and any correspondence you may receive from the schools about this. Your mom should file early.

Which brings up a point about the filing status your mom uses. Does she file married filing jointly? I thought it was this thread but it must have been another recent thread where a mom in a similar situation was filing Head of Household and people here questioned that. Your mom has her taxes done by someone because there was a form 8867 discussed near the beginning of this thread. Does she go to a CPA or just H&R Block or some such? She probably needs to really be sure she is filing with a legal status for 2014. And a place like H&R Block isn’t the most reliable of sources for something like that.

@thumper1 Income and assets for both parents are in the profile :). I should be fine then?

@annoyingdad Yes I contacted all 3 of the colleges that I sent CSS profile to. What about the colleges that I might want to send to later? How can I edit my Profile? Also, when is the earliest time my mom can file her taxes? She did not file jointly and she went to a CPA.

Ok…now I’m confused.

If you included both parents on the Profile…then why were you even doing a NCP profile?

Nevermind, the only part about him was the Parents’ Data and Noncustodial Parent sections. What should I do now?

What did you put on the Profile? Did you put all of the information about your dad? Or not?

Most of the necessary 2014 tax forms will likely be available by the first week of January, 2015. The IRS will probably start accepting 2014 returns around January 23, 2015. However, your mother will not be able to file until any employers have provided her with 2014 W-2 forms and she has received required 1099 forms (if applicable). The deadline for employers to send out W-2s is January 31.

@middkid86 she files cash income but that’s nothing to worried about.
@thumper1 It only asked me for my mom’s financial information and mine too. Penn also told me to do the NCP but put my dad as single and just explain it at the end.

I’m really really really worried about this :/

Don’t be so worried. You will be fine. When you send the Profile to additional colleges, you will need to contact those schools to explain the mistake (you can’t edit your Profile - pain, I know from experience!). Not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Okay. So I am awaiting responses for the two other colleges, UChicago and Drexel. For Penn, they said just have the right info on their own financial worksheet and I’ll be fine. When I submit my Common App in a few days, should I include information in the additional information section about this or no?

No. Info relevant to financial aid should go directly to the financial aid office, not on the admissions application - it most likely will not find its way to the right people if you put it on the application.

Okay
Should I just emailed the financial aid people and tell them? Is that all?
EDIT: I can’t find anywhere to contact Drexel financial aid…

And don’t they still require my dad’s financial info? I did mention in the CSS profile that he’s unemployed and is sick from multiple illnesses.

Your mom is supporting your dad. Surely she knows if he has any income other than what she sends him. For example, is he receiving any financial assistance from the equivalent of social security or welfare in his country? She also should know if he has any bank accounts that her name is not on. Talk with her, and get her help at finding out this information.

I already have, she lives just on my mom’s income. The country he’s in gives too little benefits and it’s overly complicated to apply for it. Penn’s settled; just worried about Drexel and UChicago.

If he has no bank accounts other than the ones with your mom, and has no income from any other source than your mom, then there are no financials to report other than your mom’s. It really is that simple.

Email Drexel and U Chicago. Tell them that you clicked the wrong box when you filed the Profile, and that generated the request for the NPC information. They will let you know if there is anything special you have to do for them.

So you’re saying they won’t question it if I just explain it via email??
I emailed UChicago but I can’t find how to email Drexel Financial Aid, only Admissions.
