<p>I have like no ECs. Literally. I tried out for President of my schools math club and got rejected (I'm really depressed since I'm really passionate about math but I can only blame myself for not building a good leader record even though the club's decision is really biased anyways).</p>
<p>So I want advice. Any advice. Any information on summer opportunities that would at least make me look like I have some decent ECs. Any internships, job opportunities, or even ideas for projects. I will sign up for volunteering at a library but that's nothing special.</p>

<p>Interships in any positive use of the word is not going to be anything you’re going to be able to get as a high school student.</p>

<p>Well my first choice for a major would be astrophysics/astronomy. As aforementioned, I also like math in general.</p>

<p>Try to volunteer at a local hospital or something.</p>
<p>^A, I don’t believe you. B, if you did, I don’t believe you did it without some family member or something hooking it up for you. C, if somehow you did it by yourself, it’s still not a realistic thing for people in high school to go for.</p>
<p>EC’s come out of passion. You really should already have EC’s. Service is good but you should play a sport, do debate, robotics, quiz bowl, or something, or do music. However these, especially robotics, music, and sports, are things you should have been doing from a young age. Summer opportunities are a distant second to those.</p>
<p>Have you ever considered tutoring people in math? If you’re passionate about math then you’re probably pretty good at it. Sorry t0 hear that you didn’t get the position you wanted, but maybe you could suggest to your math club that you all volunteer within your high school, middle, or elementaryschoool to help kids that struggle in math.</p>
<p>Or you could start a tutoring type of club, that’d show leadership…</p>

<p>You can volunteer somewhere or get a job or join a club at school. There are thousands of opportunities for volunteering and jobs, you just have to have the initiative go out and look for them.</p>

<p>@ bobtheboy: You post seems contradictory. I have no passion, at all, for music, robotics, or any sport. My problem is precisely that I started caring a little too late.</p>

<p>Tutoring & volunteering are probably your only options now.</p>
<p>There’s one more thing I can do: start an individual project that’s related to math or astronomy that will seem unique. It’s am ambitious plan, but I honestly feel there’s no other decent options for me.</p>
<p>Please, anyone have any ideas what type of project I can start on? Or know any institution near the LA area where I can work with other people on such a project or research?</p>

<p>Also, you can take the AMC 10 and/or 12 & some community college classes on advanced math (ie multivariable calculus) or astronomy</p>
<p>As for Caltech, isn’t it too late for signing up for programs? And aren’t they selective when determining who can research at their campus? What opportunities are available at Irvine? What’s AMC?</p>
<p>I can’t take Multivariable Calculus. I can take Astronomy as long as it doesn’t require math beyond Calculus AB. Does a Differential Equations or Linear Algebra class requires any math beyond Calc AB?</p>
<p>You don’t have to sign up for any program. Just give any professors related to the field of math you wish to research a call or email them. Same with UCI. Enter this research to contests such as Siemens or Intel. AMC is the American Mathematics Competition; google it. It is how people get to become Math Olympiads (USAMO). And Astronomy is usually available without math so that’s definitely a go.</p>
<p>@QwertyKey I’m in a business program and that is how I got it. Many people do get internship with the aid of something else, very rare to get it yourself.</p>
