Hey guys,

First of all, I didn't know which forum to post under, but this seems to fit best.

I am a rising senior and my stats are decent, even for top colleges, but my ECs are extremely weak.

ECs:

Freshman Year
Academic Bowl
Science Bowl

Sophomore Year
Academic Bowl (Captain JV)
Science Bowl

(Moved during the middle of the year)
Junior Year
National Honor Society
Quiz Bowl
Church League Basketball

I need more ECs, but I have limited opportunity because I live in a small, rural town in GA. I have interests in sports, especially basketball. I was hoping to do something pertinent to my major: Business.

Anyone have ideas?

I don’t think there’s anything you can do this late that will get you accepted at a place where you would have been rejected before. It’s not really about how many ECs you have as it is about the level of dedication, focus, and accomplishment you’ve shown in the ones you have.

Do you do anything other than what you listed? What did you do in the summers? Have you ever had a paid job? Do you have any hobbies like playing an instrument? Almost anything productive you do outside of school can be an EC. They don’t have to be formal or sponsored by your school.

I help out at whichever gas station my family is running at the time in summer and in the school year. For hobbies, I read a little and play basketball. I do realize that dedication is much more important than any number, but I have no choice right now.

This is an EC. Whether it’s a good one or not depends mostly on how many hours you spend on it.

If you’re looking into business see if your school has a FBLA/DECA/BPA. Those offer great opportunity to dip your feet into the business world and to compete for awards which will look good to colleges.

Join any kind of peer support group your school has as well as student council. Will help a bunch. And start either an instrument or performing art (dance, drama, speech and debate, etc) something you wouldn’t really think about doing are the things that often stand out most.

@halcyonheather , I do spend a large amount of time there. (10-15 hours a week during school, 20-25 during summer) However, how would I state that on my applications?

@gggg607, I am not talented nor interested in any of the arts, so that is not a good choice. I might consider doing speech and debate in the school year.

Thanks for the replies until now, but I was looking more for stuff I could do over the summer, as I will only have approximately 3 months before I send off EA/ED applications.

The Common App will ask you what your ECs are and how much time you spend on each of them. (You can list up to ten ECs.) I would call it “working at my family’s gas station” or something like that.
The things other people are suggesting won’t be all that useful for college admissions if you start them right now, because you only have a few months before you have to apply to colleges.

That’s what I thought. Thank you.

Can you guys do me?

-thinking of volunteering at a empowerment center (helps people get their GED, anger therapy, substance abuse therapy), American cancer society, and greenpeace. Which do you recommend?
My dream is to get into UC Berkeley, do premed but major in political science. It might seem like I’m confused about what I want to do when I’m older, but I’m sure I want to be a pediatrician. International affairs just happen to be a hobby, guess I’m going to be a very political active doctor. What EC do you guys recommend?
