I'm getting a C!

Getting a C 2nd semester, junior year

Should I be really frantically worried about this?

I've had a really busy semester and a chronic cold basically all semester. I'm getting A's in all my other classes but a C in honors algebra 2. I'm already considered to be a real " borderline" applicant in many respects... what should i do? when i apply to colleges should i explain to them the reasons behind my dropped grade? My GPA will still be a 4.40.. but stlll, that C bothers me.. what should i do? should i even be worried?

to give u any idea... ,so far the most selective schools i'm applying to are

Barnard
Uchicago
Boston U
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Pepperdine
JHU

so do u have ANY chance of gettign at least a B? if not...then ur chances might drop considering you are applying to pretty high ranked schools. but ur GPA is solid so ur chances wouldnt drop as much. But boy..if that C was in ur freshman or even ur sophmore...it would have probably no effect considering ur GPA is solid.

no, i would have to get 100% on my final in that class to get a c.. it's impossible, let me tell you. My GPA is still good, but it's not my cumalative. my cumulative is 3.75 weighted.

3.75... might wanna look at colleges other than those ones...

oh, dont worry. those aren't the only colleges i'm applying to. out of the ones i mentioned i'll probably only apply to chicago and barnard. the others i'm applying to are way in my range.

Well a C first semester is ok as long as your score doesn't send your semester grades. But during second semester tough luck. How are your stats in general? I assume you're not going to be a math major. If your other stats (SAT, EC, Awards) are great I think they could cover, but it's going to be really hard.

aaah?! you really think it's THAT bad of a situation?

Well, i suppose it is. I just want to be in denial lol. I don't know what my SAT I scores are yet, my SAT II's are as follows: Bio- 710, Spanish-720, Lit- 590.

here are the other schools im probably going to apply to (this list will definitely be revised and shortened)

UC davis
UC Irvine
UC santa cruz
UC santa barbara
Reed College
American U
Syracuse U
George Washington U

my EC's are average.. just normal. I don't have many awards. I'm just an average (horrid student when it comes to CC) student.

You live in CA right? A C your junior is definitely going to hurt you.
I'm really sure about how competitive you have to be in CA to get to UCB or UCLA. But I think it's gonna be tough to get into Chicago JHU BU. I think you would have great shot at most of the colleges you are applying on your second list. I can't really see what kind of person you are. Perhaps a science person? Are a foreigner? How is your english?

uhh... maybe it's just my school but we only show final grades, not semesters

Well, I am a foreigner by most definitions. however, I've lived my entire life here in the states. Although my first language was Russian, English my primary language and i'm definitely a humanities/English person rather than a math and science person. I try my best at math.. but nothing seems to work. I just can't do it sometimes. Tear. OH well. So you think this wont hurt me THAT much at Reed, UCD, American, Syracuse or GWU?

Despite my poor grades I think i'm still going to apply EA to Chicago... wish me luck. .

Hey for the UCs, I got a packet from guidance a few months ago, and here are some stats (numbers are listed by avg GPA, SAT score [out of 1600], SATIIMath [1 or 2C], SATIIWriting [now outdated], %admitted for 4.00+ GPA:

UCD:3.91, 1247, 639, 617, 91.6%
UCI: 3.91, 1251, 639, 618, 87.4%
UCSC: 3.71, 1199, 599, 597, 95.2%
UCSB:3.88, 1236, 623, 618, 94.1%
UCLA: 4.17, 1353, 694, 680, 46.6%
UCB: 4.17, 1359, 696, 682, 47.6%

Remember that these are UC GPAs, so none of those "6 points for AP class" things...Haha. If you want any of the other UCs, I'm ready with my big book...

those are the averages of selected people... id worry about the cutoff stats pretty much, seeing as im sure a lot of people with 4.2 gpa's apply to ucsc as a safety school with no intention of ever going, which can raise the avg gpa from a 3.5 to a 3.7.

my friend got into ucsc this year with 3.19 UC gpa and 1060 sat (old), so dont worry if your stats arent at those averages

^^ That seems about right...that it's the admit rather than overall...Those GPAs are far too high for "below UC average" students to get in.

One C will not affect your chances by much, especially if your other grades are good. You should still be able to get into at least one of your reach schools, at least BU (which isn't that hard to get into). An admissions officer at Harvard said that plenty of people that get in have had at least one C. In conclusion, don't worry.

Oh please. I received dual Cs in AP ES during my junior year. Still did terrific in the long run.

Don't worry about it.

tero:
is it really true that Harvard acceptees have C`s?

Don't freak out, but do try to get a 100 on your final. I had a 77 going into my final project (a qual scheme) in AP chem. I had to do ridiculously well to get a B. Somehow, I got a 95 on one part and a 100 on the other, so I got an 80.1. I was never so relieved to get a B in my life!
If you do get the C, try not to get too upset. My friend got into UChigaco (he'll be attending) as well as Carnegie-Mellon, WashU, Reed, and Duke. He had a C (in senior year!) and several Bs. He made up for it by getting 5s on AP tests and a 35 ACT.

Take a deep breath, a 3.75 GPA is NOT bad. If I was worrying about anything on your application, it would be your ECs, not that one C. I think that the AdComs, being the educated people they are, are more capable of seing the big picture than just rejecting you on the basis of one C. They understand that things happen, and while that C is not the best thing that could happen to your application, it is not neccessarily going to be your downfall.

thanks guys.
