I'm going to get a B this quarter, what should I do!?

I'm a freshman, and I've had straight A's since the beginning of the yr, and now since the third quarter is going to end soon I'm almost certain that I'm going to get a B on my AP human geography class. I struggled a lot in the first half of the semester to maintain a A in this class. I know Friends at a different school now, who's getting a easy A in that class, I know that sometimes you're going to get a teacher who's going to be hard on you and who can't teach so well which is just plainly bad luck, so I can't really complain about that. Social Studies is never my thing, but of course that's not a acceptable excuse for my parents. So my question is, is getting a B in the quarter going to effect you GPA in general, because I know that in my school, you semester GPA and HPA is determined upon your grades from BOTH of the quarter and plus you final exam. I will still have a chance of getting a A for the semester for this class as long as I get A's rest of the yr. But would my quarter GPA and HPA still be valid? Which grade would the colleges look at(semester or quarter)? And which one will the high school look at to determine the valedictorian? currently I'm rank 5 in my class out of almost 600 students, and that's only because I've taken many of the mandatory classes that's needed for graduation, so that means eventually the people I'm competing with will also take those courses and that will lower down their HPA no matter what because the mandatory classes are all regular classes which doesn't have a curve on the HPA. Plus I'm taking many college level class which will boost up my HPA, which means I can still have a chance of being valedictorian. But I'm afraid this B is going to effect it. Is getting a B(in a AP class)in high school going to effect my college acceptance? If I want to get into colleges like Columbia or NYU? I've already argued with my dad about this issue, he and I have a different opinion on this. Like all parents he believes a B is not acceptable when you're a straight A student. I've only been here in the US for 4 yrs and English is not my mother language which made me struggle hard in my middle school yrs, I use to get C's and B's and few A's, until my 8th grade yr when I finally got straight A's, prior to that my dad will never have a problem with me getting B or C's(well of course he won't be happy with it, but never a big deal.) Of course as I gradually progress, the expectation of my parents went up to, so that now even getting a B won't be acceptable. Which I agree in most cases, but people make mistakes and sometimes a straight A student would get a B. I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with getting a B, of course there is, but sometime you just can't avoid it. I'm always the kind of person that worries too much about things that aren't even in the close future, so this B really makes me nerves about my future. And so this is what I think, I believe as the world getting more and more competitive and aggressive each yrs getting straight A's is not a big deal anymore when it comes to getting into a good college. You have to make yourself special to let your application pop out from all the others, don't get me wrong I didn't mean that getting A's are meaningless I'm just saying getting A's are not enough for the colleges anymore in a world today. So I have a few things that could make a distinction between me and others and right now I'm not really worried about that, but I have a feeling that this B is really going to mess up my future. I hate the education system today and how the society brain washes you since you're a kid to make you believe that going to school is the only way out, that your grade is the only thing that will determines, define, and the only thing that matters to you up to this point. Education systems make us like the cookies out of the cookie cutters, or at least that what they want us to be, and the crooked ones are not needed for the society. But what if we are not meant to take tests, what if we are meant to be artist, or writers, or athletes? Where they make you believe that getting into higher education is the only way you could have a better life, and to be the elite of the society. But we have to accept it. OK I think I've gone to far. But please be honest with me, I know that small things matter when it comes to college when there are thousands of students who are just like you or even better then you who are applying, and I know there are many other factors into this too like SAT and ACT PERT and so on, but right now my question is only about the grades. So will my GPA and HPA effect which college I'll be going to? Like I said above that I wish to go the schools like Columbia or NYU, so these will give you reference on the schools I would like to go to and if it's possible or not? and please answer the questions prior to this also. Thank you.

I didn’t read the whole thing, but i can address how unimportant the B in freshman year is. Some schools won’t even use it to calculate your GPA–that’s how important it is! It’s also important that you enjoy high school and not think of it as only a launching pad to college. A B is a big whup, nothing more. Several Bs and more Cs are just as significant.

tldr - but I think you might need some counseling before you blow a circuit or two. Seriously. This is not normal behavior or thinking. Talk to a professional.

Dad may need some counseling, too.

I can’t imagine an occasional B is going to hurt when it comes to NYU admission

Few schools put quarter grades on transcripts. Usually only semester or year end grades go on transcripts. It’s unlikely colleges will see quarter grades.

That said, a B is no big deal.
