I'm Homeschooled and Looking for scholarships

I attenedted public school up until ninth grade, and then started homeschool.
I am in tenth grade now, and we are very low income so I would expect any scholarship that is availible to low income people would be availible for us. My area of college interest is in the area's of filmmaking, directing, writing, screenwriting, producing, and acting. If there are any good scholarships for Someone majoring any where around there I would be really interested.

I'm just getting started with my college searching and I know very little about the whole deal, but I would really like to attend college in either New York or California. Thanks, I appriciate any help I can get!

Hi NatalieLouise,
My S is applying to schools for filmmaking. We have not found any scholarships specific to filmmaking majors. Your best bet is going to be need-based scholarships. It is very, very difficult to be accepted to filmmaking programs, so you will definitely want to have a "Plan B"...in other words, something else you'd like to study in college if you are not accepted into a filmmaking program.

You will need to have top grades and very good SAT scores to be considered for film school, and you'll also need to have a record of having done lots of creative things. You will likely need to take some SAT subject tests and score well on those.

Go to the College Board website and go through the college search thing. Once you have a few schools to consider, look at their website and specifically try to find out what kind of need-based aid they offer.

You can win scholarships if you participate in Junior Miss.

The best thing you can do is keep your grades up, take some challenging classes (you can do APs online at pahomeschoolers.com) and do well on the SAT. My DS has filmmaking experience and it has really been a major topic of conversation for his scholarship interviews. He's been offered scholarships at 2 schools and is a finalist at 2 more. We're low income, too, so scholarships make a huge difference. If you have good stats, are articulate and can write a good essay, and have good extracurriculars (sounds like you do), I think you will find scholarships. Just be careful to apply to several match and safety schools, not just reaches. You get merit aid at matches and safeties :-)

Huguenot, Is your S planning to major in filmmaking/film production? I just wondered since that's what my S has applied for.
